New Study Finds that Trademark Ownership Makes Companies More Valuable

A recent study found that companies who file the most trademarks become more valuable than their peers.

Specifically, the study found that the stock performance of companies filing the most trademarks each year (relative to their total assets), had stocks that performed better in the next 12 months than companies that were not as active with new trademark filings.

I promise that I did not commission or pay for this study!

That said, I can say that my own anecdotal evidence does back up these findings.

Since opening Gerben IP 14 years ago, the clients of ours that have prioritized trademark protection have, in almost all cases, been wildly successful companies.

As I am sure you can imagine, no company (or entrepreneur) really likes spending time or money on lawyers.

I get it. Lawyers, in general, (and many times deservingly so) have a bad rap.

But investing in building a domestic and international trademark portfolio is incredibly critical in today’s world. And it is not something that can be done easily (or correctly) with an online service for $99 (despite what you may read).

Every single day, I talk to clients about budgets and how much they want to invest in trademark protection. It is a difficult conversation. Clearly, I am biased, as the more work a client elects to do, the more revenue is generated for our firm. I always do my best to take my bias out of the equation and focus on what the client really needs to do. Nevertheless, I find myself many times feeling that the client is doing the “bare minimum” and failing to invest in proper protection around its brand.

If you are wondering if you have invested enough in your trademark protection, take a quick read of this study from UCLA.
