Boston Market Corporation is Rohan Group’s wholly-owned subsidiary, operating over 325 company-owned restaurants in 28 states. Boston Market’s specialization is in homestyle meals sold in takeout format.
Primarily, the business sells chicken, turkey, meatloaf, and ham. The restaurant serves these main dishes with a wide selection of side dishes that suit every taste. These include salads, desserts, and breads which are the top choices.
Boston Market’s main objective is to supply replacements for home meals. With that, the business offers a convenient lunchtime menu, with some of its foods being available frozen in local grocers.
Let’s look at this behemoth’s history and trademarks.
Boston Market Company History
Until 1995, Boston Market was known as Boston Chicken. The business started as an American casual restaurant chain based in Newton, a suburb of Boston, founded by Arthur Cores and Steven Kolow in 1985.
Before changing the name to Boston Market in February 1995, the company primarily sold rotisserie chicken with various side dishes. Its rebranding came with an expansion of the menu, which then included meatloaf, turkey, and ham.
The corporate entity operating the business remained known as “Boston Chicken Inc” until 1997 when the new name became very popular, and the corporation changed its name to “Boston Market Corporation.”
In the early and mid-’90s, Boston Market expanded rapidly, taking on a large debt to finance its expansion. Despite the debt, the fast growth gave the company a steady stream of revenue accrued from one-time development fees and increasing royalties. However, the interest rates on its development loans also increased.
By 1998, Boston Market was $900 million in debt and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. McDonald’s Corporation swooped in and purchased the business in May 2000, making it a subsidiary of the Golden Arches.
McDonald’s initially acquired Boston Market because of its real estate potential. However, the company found the Boston Market brand had value and continued to operate and expand the chain.
In 2007, McDonald’s announced that it was exploring strategic options for Boston Market. By August 2007, McDonald’s sold the company to Sun Capital Partners, completing the transaction on August 27, 2007.
Rohan Group acquired Boston Market from Sun Capital Partners in April 2020.
Boston Market Menu and Trademark Disputes
In 1996, as part of its drive for new menu items, Boston Market launched “Boston Carver Sandwiches,” a line of sandwiches that featured turkey, chicken, meatloaf, and ham. Thanks to the new line’s success, the “Extreme Carver Sandwiches” were launched in 1997, filled with larger portions of the Boston Carver Sandwiches meat and cheese offerings.
In 2005, Boston Market started offering customers limited-time offers such as oven-baked chicken breast with gravy and Crispy Country Chicken. During Lent, on Fridays, Boston Market also offered haddock, baked white fish, or cod.
The company still introduces new items and flavors to its menus, such as Oven Crisp Chicken, BBQ Ribs, and Parmesan Tuscan Chicken Premium Dish. In April 2018, the company announced a new offering, rotisserie prime rib, launched nationwide. The restaurant would serve it three days a week.
Many supermarkets across the U.S have also been selling a selection of Boston Market-branded items since April 1999. In April 2004, Boston Market included chilled menu items in its selection of items sold at supermarkets. By December 2005, 700 supermarkets were stocking the chilled menu items.
Boston Market also sells frozen meals and side dishes, previously manufactured by H. J. Heinz Company and Overhill Farms of Vernon, California. This was until Bellisio Foods purchased Overhill Foods.
Boston Market also offers catering services for different-sized events such as office holiday parties, office meetings, and private events. Customers can have their meals delivered or picked up at the restaurant.
Boston Market’s primary menu item is rotisserie chicken. Their menu would play stage in litigation against the company by Boston Pizza concerning its use of the trademarked word “Boston” in Canada.
The lawsuit was filed by Boston Pizza in 2002, alleging Boston Market infringed its federal trademark in Canada. Boston Market argued that Boston Pizza’s trademark was invalid because it described a style of pizza from a specific area.
Even after Boston Market ceased Canadian operations in 2004, the dispute continued. It was settled in 2008, with Boston Market agreeing that it would not use the words “Boston” or “Boston Market” in Canada for five years while referring to its restaurants or food and drink products.
Boston Market Trademarks
Boston Market has sought or obtained a federal registration for over 30 trademarks. These include “BOSTON CHICKEN,” “BOSTON MARKET,” “ROTISERRIE CARVER,” and “COMFORT SERVED.”
Boston Market obtained federal trademark registration for “BOSTON MARKET” on March 19, 1996. The company uses the trademark for its prepared entrees, primarily consisting of chicken and other poultry products with various side dishes consumed on or off the premises.
