Bojangles is an American company that owns and operates regional fast food restaurants. The company, incorporated as Bojangles OpCo, LLC, was previously known as Bojangles’ Famous Chicken ‘n Biscuits until 2020.
Bojangles specializes in Cajun-seasoned fried chicken and buttermilk biscuits. It serves these dishes primarily in the Southeastern United States.
Let’s dive into the company’s history, menu offerings, and trademarks.
Bojangles History
Bojangles was founded in Charlotte, North Carolina, by Jack Fulk and Richard Thomas in 1977. The company has operated franchised restaurants domestically and internationally in Jamaica, Grand Cayman Island, Mexico, Honduras, China, and Ireland.
Currently, the company has restaurants in 14 U.S. states. These include Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Mississippi, Maryland, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Virginia.
Bojangles also operates restaurants in the District of Columbia, with planned expansions into Ohio and Texas. The largest number of locations can be found in its home state of North Carolina.
The first Bojangles location opened in Charlotte in 1977. The first franchised restaurant started operations in the following year.
In 1981, Jack Fulk sold the Bojangles’ concept to Horn & Hardart Company of New York. The fast food restaurant shot to fame following Hurricane Hugo in 1981 when it kept its restaurants open when most other fast-food restaurants were closed.
Under Horn & Hardart’s ownership, Bojangles proliferated, increasing to 335 restaurants. One hundred of these restaurants were located in Florida. Most of Bojangles’ growth during this time was fueled by acquisitions, including the Florida-based chain, Biscuits.
Sienna Partners and Interwest Partners acquired a majority interest in Bojangles from Horn & Hardart in 1990. At the time, former KFC executive, Dick Campbell, headed the company.
Bojangles attempted to take the company public in 1994. Later, a group of investors bought the company in 1998 through financing from FMAC.
Bojangles continued expanding aggressively throughout the ‘90s and 2000s. In 2003, the restaurant chain opened its 300th location.
In 2005, Bojangles started its first college campus location at Central Piedmont Community College. The company also bought naming rights to the original Charlotte Coliseum on Independence Boulevard.
Falfurrias Capital Partners purchased Bojangles in 2007. One year later, the company opened its first airport location at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
Advent International, a Boston-based private equity firm, acquired Bojangles from Falfurrias in August 2011, after a competitive bidding process with other potential investors.
Bojangles started sponsoring the NASCAR race, Bojangles Southern 500, in 2012. Later that same year, it opened another college campus restaurant at UNC Greensboro. On July 18, 2014, Bojangles opened its 600th restaurant.
Once more, Bojangles attempted to go public, filing an IPO of its common stock in April 2015. The company expected to raise $372 million. The company wouldn’t remain public long, as Jordan Company and Durational Capital Management acquired Bojangles on January 28, 2019, turning it into a privately held company. Bojangles’ shareholders received $16.10 a share from the sale.
Bojangles struck a landmark deal with Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores in December 2019. This agreement would see the opening of 40 new Bojangles locations at Love’s locations in Oklahoma, Illinois, Mississippi, and Arkansas over the next ten years. These states are significant as they will all be new states for Bojangles’ expansion.
Bojangles dropped the apostrophe from its name, previously Bojangles’, on August 3, 2020. The company also released a video the same day announcing its partnership with Dale Earnhardt Jr. He was the first celebrity to say, “It’s Bo Time.”
Bojangles has planned expansion into new locations. On March 5, 2021, the company announced expanding into Columbus, Ohio, later in the year, making it its first Ohio location. In March 2022, the company announced plans to open ten new locations in New Jersey.
Bojangles Menu Offerings
Bojangles restaurants offer a full menu for the entirety of their operating hours, meaning that you can order breakfast, lunch, or dinner – regardless of the time of day. The most popular breakfast item is the restaurant’s biscuit sandwiches, which come in many options, such as the restaurant’s signature Cajun chicken filet biscuit, egg, cheese, bacon, country ham, sausage, or country fried steak.
The signature menu item for lunch and dinner is bone-in fried chicken, which is served with various side items that the restaurant calls “Fixin’s.” These include Cajun-seasoned pinto beans, French fries, Bo-tato rounds, green beans, coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, grits, and mashed potatoes.
Bojangles also offers boneless chicken tenders called “Chicken Supremes.” They’re served with a variety of fried and grilled chicken sandwiches, dipping sauces, several salads, and a fish sandwich called Bojangler.
Their salads can be topped with either fried or grilled chicken.
Bojangles Trademarks
Bojangles has obtained or sought federal registration for about 55 trademarks. These include “BO-TATO ROUNDS,” “LEGENDARY ICED TEA,” “BOJANGLER,” and “BO’S BREAKFAST BOX.”
Bojangles obtained federal trademark registration for “BO-TATO ROUNDS” on July 19, 1988, and it uses the trademark for processed, fried potatoes consumed on or off the premises.
In May 2022, Bojangles sought federal trademark registration for “BO’S BREAKFAST BOX.” The company intends to use the trademark for combination meals comprising sweet biscuits, biscuits, and biscuit sandwiches.
