The San Jose Sharks are the professional NHL team playing in San Jose, California. The team plays in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. The Sharks were founded in 1991, and they were the first NHL team based in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1976. The team has only managed to go to the Stanley Cup Final once, and unfortunately, they lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins, losing the chance to be crowned the 2016 Stanley Cup Champions.

The shark chomping on a stick logo has been the team’s logo since their first season and was only modified slightly before the 2007 season. The triangle behind the shark represents the Bay Area’s “Red Triangle” right beside the Pacific Ocean. The team’s original colors were teal, white, gray, and black, and the colors have not changed. In 1997 and 2001, the team added secondary and tertiary uniforms, including a predominantly black jersey with the “fin” logo and very little teal and white on the sleeves.

One of the most unique trademarks that the Sharks have registered is their decoration on their Zamboni (the machine that cleans the ice). The Sharks have added a shark fin to the top of their Zamboni and registered the image as of 1992. Another distinct trademark is the remote-controlled shark that flies around the stadium during intermissions, and this shark has been registered since 1998. Adding to their robust portfolio, the franchise filed and registered a trademark for a shark head that is the tunnel that the team skates out of before the game. Finally, as with very few other teams, the San Jose Sharks have registered their mascot as a trademark as of 2008.
