Ottawa Senators Trademarks
February 20, 2021
The Ottawa Senators are officially known as the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club, but colloquially known as the Sens. The team plays in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the NHL. The current Senators are the second Senators team in Ottawa – the first Senators team was founded in 1883 and won 11 Stanley Cups. The current Senators began playing in 1990 and have only played in the Stanley Cup once in 2007, but they left without a Cup.
The Senators are one of two teams that provide French translations, and this French identity permeates the team’s website, social media, and arena announcements. The team has stuck to the regal Senator since 1991, and the designer described him as a “centurion figure.” The first logo was the profile of a Senator, but since 2007, the team has used a more forward-facing figure. The old primary logo has become the secondary logo and remains active in commerce on merchandise.
What the Senators have failed to file trademarks for is Spartacat – their anthropomorphic lion mascot. He has been a part of the team since 1992. Another gap in the franchise trademark portfolio is to take advantage of the fanbase trademarks. For example, the fans are known as the Sens Army, and are known to dress up in Roman clothing. This Sens Army can be found at activities such as Red Rallies of decorated cars, and both of these phrases are central to the Ottawa Senators brand yet are unprotected.
