Sir James Paul McCartney is a singer, producer, composer, writer, and artist from Liverpool, England. He is self-taught as a songwriter, pianist, and guitar player. Throughout his career, he became one of the most successful composers and singers of all time. He performed with three different bands, The Beatles being the most successful of the three, having at one point created a craze dubbed “Beatlemania.” Some of the Beatles’ most famous works include “A Hard Day’s Night” (1964), “Tomorrow Never Knows” (1966), “Strawberry Fields Forever” (1967), and “Hey Jude” (1968).
After the Beatles, McCartney helped to form the band, Wings. Their most popular songs included “Live and Let Die” (1973) and “Listen to What the Man Said” (1975). Overall, he recorded more than 25 studio albums, nine live albums, and two EPs. In his career, which spans over six decades, he has been awarded multitudes of awards, including 18 Grammys and two inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. McCartney is still active as a singer, producer, writer, and artist.
Paul McCartney created MPL Communications Limited in 1969, as the umbrella company for his business interests. In 2000, MPL Communications Limited obtained a federal trademark registration for a logo, which is a stylized version of “Paul McCartney” to be used for musical sound recordings, including CDs and DVDs among other things. The application also covered printed materials like sheet music, concert and tour brochures, and books that include art and poetry, as well as clothing, such as waistcoats, dressing gowns, hats, and caps. In addition, it covers things like live musical performances, music production, and music for motion picture films.
MPL Communications Limited obtained a federal trademark registration for a logo which is an image of Paul McCartney’s signature in 2006 to be used with musical sound recordings such as CDs and DVDs, cassette tapes, and cinematographic films with musical performances. It also covered use for printed materials like sheet music, posters, concert brochures and calendars, greeting cards, and postcards. The application also covered use for clothing items such as suits, jackets, t-shirts, and hats, and entertainment services that include live performances, live literary performances, educational and training services, and pre-recorded music for films.
Paul McCartney may have formed the band, Wings in 1971, but his company didn’t obtain a federal trademark registration for the name until 2021. In 2019, it applied for a trademark for “WINGS” to be used for the reproduction of musical performances, CDs and DVDs, and films featuring musical performances. It also applied to printed matter such as calendars, sheet music, and concert and tour brochures. In 2020, the company also applied for a trademark for the Wings logo to be used on CDs and DVDs of musical performances, video and sound recordings, and films featuring musical performances. The federal trademark application also covered use for printed material such as concert and tour brochures, sheet music, and calendars. Additionally, the application covers clothing items including jackets, caps, hooded tops, and more as well as use for musical entertainment, specifically live performances.
In September of 2019, McCartney released a children’s book. The book, Hey Grandude! is about a grandfather (called Grandude) who takes his three grandchildren (Chillers) on amazing adventures. Grandude’s Green Submarine (2021) is the sequel, and it introduces a new character Nandude, the “Chillers” grandmother. MPL Communications Limited has filed several trademark applications for names and phrases related to this book series.
MPL Communications Limited applied for a trademark registration for “GRANDUDE” for use with children’s fiction audio books, downloadable book series, and ebooks. It also covers use with children’s books in general, as well as clothing such as t-shirts, cardigans, and polo shirts. The application was also for use for a broad cross-section of toys and sporting goods. Some of these include but are not limited to, collectible toy figures, bathtub toys, board games, inflatable pool toys, and Christmas tree ornaments.
The company also obtained a federal trademark registration for “GRANDUDE” to cover use with children’s books, as well as children’s fiction audio books, downloadable book series, and ebooks. It also obtained a trademark registration for “GRANDUDE” to cover clothing items like shirts, pants, wind resistant jackets, and others, as well as for a vast array of toys and sporting goods.
MPL Communications Limited also applied for a trademark for “CHILLERS” for use with photographs, printed patterns for clothing, gift wrapping paper, paper cake decorations, and other items. The application also covers clothing items such as footwear, t-shirts and jackets, and a wide-ranging assortment of toys and sporting goods.
In 2021, MPL Communications Limited applied for a trademark for “NANDUDE,” McCartney’s most recent literary character. The application covers use for downloadable book series and ebooks, as well as use with children’s books, coloring books, activity books, and other paper-based items. The application is also for use with a diverse selection of toys and sporting goods including board games, radio-controlled toy vehicles, plush toys, and children’s multiple activity toys.
