Leonardo DiCaprio is an award-winning actor and director and outspoken environmentalist. He is well known for many of his onscreen works including What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Titanic, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio is from Los Angeles, California. He was born in 1974 and is the only child of Irmelin Indenbirken and George DiCaprio. He attended John Marshall High School, but dropped out after his third year, receiving his general equivalency diploma sometime later.

DiCaprio started his career acting in commercials around the age of fourteen. He was in commercials for brands like Bubble Yum, Apple Jacks, Mattel’s Matchbox Cars and Kraft Foods. His earliest television appearances were in 1990 on shows including Santa Barbara, The Outsiders and Parenthood. The next year, he appeared in an episode of Roseanne and in the movie Critters 3. He gained a role in the cast of Growing Pains, but soon quit.

He was cast in the film Poison Ivy in 1992 and then was picked by Robert De Niro to play opposite him in the movie This Boy’s Life (1993). He found great success with What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, which was both critically acclaimed and a commercial success. The film earned him his first Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe nomination. He continued to land movie roles in 1995 and 1996 and appeared in The Quick and the Dead, The Basketball Diaries, Total Eclipse, Romeo and Juliet and Marvin’s Room.

DiCaprio was propelled to international fame in 1997 when he starred in the epic film Titanic. It won eleven Academy Awards, and he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for the film. The movie brought in more than two billion dollars at the box office.

In 1998, he appeared in Woody Allen’s Celebrity, and starred in The Man in the Iron Mask. In 2000, DiCaprio was supposed to star in American Psycho. He instead opted to take the lead role in The Beach, which was not a commercial or critical success. He also turned down a role in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. DiCaprio had great success in Catch Me If You Can (2002), directed by Steven Speilberg, and Gangs of New York (2002), directed by Martin Scorsese.

Appian Way Productions, was founded by Dicaprio in 2004. He began co-producing films under the company’s label including The Assassination of Richard Nixon (2004) and The Aviator (2004). The trademark for Appian Way Productions (as an entertainment service provider) is held by Birken Productions, Inc., whose Chief Executive Officer is Leonardo DiCaprio.

In 2006, DiCaprio co-starred with Jack Nicholson in Scorsese’s The Departed. That year also saw him star in Blood Diamond, a political war thriller. He had a starring role in Body of Lies (2008), which was a spy movie. He starred with Titanic co-star Kate Winslet in Revolutionary Road (2008) and then produced the film Orphan (2009), which was a psychological horror thriller.

For the next few years, he would go on to produce and star in many more films and projects, including Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar (2011), Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained (2012), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) and Runner Runner (2013). However at this time, DiCaprio would start to spend more time seriously dedicating himself to the environmental causes that mean so much to him.

He created the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998 and registered a trademark for the name and logo of the organization in 2018. The foundation is dedicated to promoting ideas about sustainable living and environmentalism. As early as 2007, he made his voice heard with The 11th Hour, which premiered at the The Cannes Film Festival. It was an environmental documentary film in the same vein as Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth. The film was awarded with the Earthwatch Environmental Film Award. He also produced Greensburg which was a television series about a town rebuilt with only sustainable methods.

More than just a spokesperson, it is widely known that DiCaprio tries to live in an environmentally friendly way as possible, owning electric-hybrid vehicles and a solar powered home. At Russia’s Tiger Summit, he donated one million dollars to the Wildlife Conservation Society. He also raised money for the release of a captive tiger in Louisiana. He was named the UN representative on climate change, met with Pope Francis in 2016 and publicly opposed the Dakota Access Pipeline. His organization has pledged over $15 million to protect Native American civil rights, $5 million to help protect the Amazon after devastating fires and $43 million to help with conservation efforts in the Galapagos Islands.

DiCaprio is still a working actor and producer. He is an astute businessman who registered a trademark for his own name as an entertainer in 2003. DiCaprio is well known for his diverse portfolio of properties, and currently resides in Hollywood, California. His net worth is generally thought to be about $260 million.
