Sprinter Usain Bolt, hailing from Jamaica, produced one of the most remarkable Olympic gold medal streaks in history, winning gold in three consecutive Olympic games from 2008 to 2016 while capturing the admiration of fans the world over. Lauded as the “fastest man alive” – and, by many, as the most talented sprinter ever – Bolt built on the potent combination of incredible ability, a magnetic personality, and a flair for theatrics, to become one of the most popular and well-known athletes in the world.
Born in 1986, Usain Bolt’s rise to prominence began as a teenager, first dominating competition in Jamaica and later gaining notoriety in international youth competitions. At the age of 15, Bolt won gold in the 200 m at the World Junior Championships, posting a finals time of 20.61 s. Continuing to win gold medals in youth events, Bolt’s Olympic debut at the 2004 Athens games was nevertheless underwhelming, hindered by injury and resulting in a first-round elimination in Bolt’s then-signature event, the 200 m.
Bolt’s potential began to be fully realized with the addition of Coach Glen Mills in 2005, who helped Bolt to appreciate the importance of training and focus as he approached his prime years, with the 2008 Olympic games looming. Gaining prominence in world racing events over the ensuing years, Bolt’s interim years between Olympic culminated in a new 100 m world record of 9.72 s. With the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics just a few weeks away, Bolt’s abilities were cresting.
The Beijing games brought high expectations, bolstered in no small part by the 200 m and 400 m record holder himself, Michael Johnson, who averred his belief in Bolt’s ability to deliver on sprinting’s most prominent stage, the Olympics. Bolt did not disappoint, breaking his own world record in the 100 m with a time of 9.69 s – easily winning the gold medal – while also breaking Johnson’s 200 m world record the next day, posting a 19.30 s time while running against a 0.9 m/s headwind. With another record-breaking gold medal performance in the 4 x 100 m relay (though the medal was later stripped as a result of a teammate’s link to performance-enhancing drugs), Bolt had arrived.
Bolt continued to complete between the 2008 and 2012 Olympic games, experiencing successes mixed with the occasional misfortune (such as a 2011 false start at the World Championships) and underwhelming performance. As Bolt’s performance ramped up in the events preceding the 2012 London games, he appeared poised for success – and delivered, successfully defending his 100 m and 200 m gold medals – becoming the first man to do so, and delivering a new 100 m Olympic record in the process. With another gold medal in the 4 x 100 m relay, Bolt secured his legacy.
For his final act on the Olympic stage, at the 2016 Rio games, Bolt yet again won gold in the 100 m, 200 m, and 4 x 100 m relay, taking his place as an athletic legend, having never lost an Olympic final while setting record upon record.
Building upon his winning legacy and personality, Bolt has secured several trademarks for use with athletic gear, clothing, accessories, and other products. These trademarks include his name, “Usain Bolt,” the stylized initials “UB,” and a silhouette logo of Bolt’s signature preparatory and celebratory pose, pointing into the air with an outstretched arm while the other arm remains bent behind the head.
The “pose” logo mark is protected for use across a broad selection of products, including sunglasses, sports bags, running shoes, sporting goods, games, hats, and more. The logo mark, along with the name and initial mark, protect Bolt’s ability to apply his identifying marks to lifestyle items as well as the athletic gear with which he is most closely associated.
