Patrick Surtain II is a professional football player, who plays defensive back for the Denver Broncos.

Patrick Frank Surtain II was born in Plantation, Florida on April 14, 2000. He is the son of Patrick Surtain and Michelle Surtain. Patrick Surtain Sr is a former NFL player, who played for the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs and was a three-time Pro Bowler, during his 11-year career. The elder Surtain coached his son at American Heritage High School (AHHS), a private, college preparatory school in Plantation, Florida, where they won two state titles together. AHHS won a third state title under Coach Surtain after Surtain II graduated. In 2020, the elder Surtain was named High School Football Association Coach of the Year and was hired as a member of the Miami Dolphins coaching staff the year before Surtain II was drafted into the NFL.

While Pat Surtain II played a big part in leading his high school team to two state championships, his statistics did not represent that fact. In fact, during his senior year of high school, Surtain only recorded one interception, as his reputation for defense meant that the player he was covering was rarely thrown to. At the end of his senior year in high school, he was a consensus five-star recruit and honored as All-USA Second Team Defense, All-USA Florida Football First Team, All-America Second Team by MaxPreps, and Sun-Sentinel All-County First Team. He was included in Nike’s “The Opening” and was a U.S. Army All-American. Surtain was considered to be the second-best player in the state of Florida and the eighth-best player in the nation.

Although Surtain was heavily recruited by and had a strong relationship with both Florida State University and Louisiana State University, he committed to the University of Alabama. He would play football for the Crimson Tide, for three seasons under famed coach Nick Saban.

As a freshman, Surtain started in 11 of the 15 games he played for Alabama. He made his collegiate debut against Louisville, where what would have been his first interception for the Crimson Tide was voided by a penalty. He also played in Alabama’s home opener against Arkansas State and performed well. Surtain played a key role in defeating Ole Miss in Oxford and earned his first start against Texas A&M. He recorded his first recorded interception when he picked Kellen Mond and returned the ball almost 20 yards before being tackled. He also had outstanding games against Arkansas, Missouri, and Tennessee and played in the SEC Championship game against Georgia and in the National Championship game against Clemson. Surtain had 37 tackles and one interception during his freshman season. He was a Freshman All-American and named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.

As a sophomore at the University of Alabama, Surtain had an equally productive year as a full-time starter, often at the Star position. That year, he recorded 42 tackles, three forced fumbles, and two interceptions. Pro Football Focus named him an honorable mention All-American.

In his junior year, which would be his final year with the Crimson Tide, Surtain started in every game and helped his team to win both the SEC Championship and the National Championship. He was named game Most Valuable Defensive Player for his efforts in the Tide’s playoff game against Notre Dame and again in their National Championship victory against Ohio State. He was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and was a unanimous first-team All-American.

Surtain was not able to participate in the NFL Combine, but he had an outstanding showing at Alabama’s Pro Day, where he recorded a 4.42-second 40-yard dash and a 39-inch vertical jump. Projected as a top ten pick, he was chosen by the Denver Broncos as the ninth pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. His rookie contract was for four years and was worth more than $20 million.

His first professional start was against the Jacksonville Jaguars, where Surtain recorded his first interception in the league, which came against Trevor Lawrence, who was a former Clemson quarterback. His first professional pick-six came in week twelve, against the Los Angeles Rams, which he ran back for 70 yards for a touchdown. In his rookie season, he had 38 tackles, four interceptions, and a touchdown and was named PFWA All-Rookie Team.

As is common in the NFL as well as other pro sports, Surtain has merchandise associated with his likeness as an athlete, as well as a football camp. In 2020, his mother Michelle Surtain applied for trademarks for phrases and logos associated with these endeavors.

Surtain’s mother applied for a federal trademark registration for his name “PATRICK SURTAIN II” for conducting youth football programs and camps, services related to youth programs and camps, as well as for merchandise that includes clothing items, athletic apparel, and football uniforms.

She also applied for a trademark for “PS2,” “SURTAINLY BLESSED,” and “PSII” for use with clothing items such as athletic apparel and football uniforms, sports-related goods such as basketballs and footballs, and for conducting youth football programs and camps, as well as services related to them.
