Lamar Jackson, an NFL upstart, who impressed the world with his second season, won the NFL MVP in 2019 by a unanimous vote. Jackson was born in 1997 and was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens as the 32nd overall pick of the 2018 draft.  While he began as a backup, after the starting quarterback got injured, Jackson helped the team reach the playoffs and was the team’s starter the following year.

During his first full season, Jackson set the NFL record for the most rushing yards in a season by a quarterback, and he set the league record that year with 36 touchdown passes. After his first game, and an incredible 59-10 blowout, Jackson coined the phrase “Not bad for a running back” in his postgame news conference. Since then, Jackson has made a lot of promises to Baltimore, including “You are Going to Get a Bowl Out of Me.”

What sets Jackson apart from many of the other stars in the football world, is that since he’s so new to the game, he understood the importance of building a brand early and feast. The older MVP’s, such as Tom Brady, enter into multimillion-dollar contracts with Under Armour or Nike, but Jackson started his own brand “Era 8” instead.

In addition to his brand, Jackson has begun protecting phrases related to him and his game. In the 2020 off-season, Jackson has filed for trademarks “Not Bad for a Running Back,” “You are Going to Get a Bowl Out of Me, Believe That!”, and “The Lamar Jackson Experience.” These trademarks also came right before Jackson filed a federal right of publicity and trademark lawsuit against Amazon for allowing sellers to profit from Jackson’s fame by making counterfeit tee-shirts.
