Kawhi Leonard, born June 29, 1991, is a professional basketball player. He currently plays for the LA Clippers, but he has also played for the San Antonio Spurs and the Toronto Raptors. Leonard was drafted as the 15th overall pick in the 2011 draft, and he has proven his worth by leading both the Spurs and the Raptors to NBA Championships.
Leonard won his first NBA Finals MVP in 2014 and most recently in 2019. Two years after his first win, he started to file trademarks to protect his brand. Leonard’s first trademark was for KL2 for certain apparel, and more recently he filed to expand the clothing he intends to sell. In addition to the KL2 mark, Leonard has filed for phrases such as “What It Do Baby,” City Views Over Interviews,” and even “Kawhi It.” All of these phrases are filed as intent to use applications for apparel, so we may see new branded apparel pop up in the media soon.
Kawhi Leonard may not have a diverse trademark portfolio, but the issue of his trademark portfolio was in the mainstream news when he and Nike were fighting about who owned the infamous claw after his endorsement deal finished. Kawhi had been using his “KLAW” logo for a while, and he submitted a rough draft to Nike, who cleaned it up and filed for a copyright. Leonard then filed for a trademark on the same image, and the dispute ultimately made it to federal court on the West Coast. The judge in Oregon ruled that Nike ultimately owned the KLAW logo, but did not allow Nike to sue Kawhi for infringement.
