Giannis Antetokounmpo was born to Nigerian immigrants in Athens, Greece in 1994. Because of this, he did not officially have Greek citizenship or documentation from Nigeria. He did not receive Greek citizenship until a few weeks before the NBA Draft and then received his Nigerian passport several years later, giving him dual citizenship.
Antetokounmpo began playing basketball in his early teens and by 2011 was playing semi-professional basketball in Greece. In 2012, he signed a four-year contract with a Spanish team and in 2013 was selected as a special participant for the Greek League All-Star Game. He became eligible for the NBA Draft in 2013 and was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks.
As an 18-year-old rookie, he was one of the youngest people to ever play in the NBA, and he had a noteworthy first season. He averaged almost seven points per game as well as 4.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and almost a block and steal in every game. He played in a total of 77 games that year and scored double digits 23 times. He also had more than ten rebounds in two games, giving him two double-doubles on the season. He led NBA rookies in blocks and was the seventh-best in Bucks history. He was chosen for the Rising Stars Challenge at NBA All-Star Weekend. In just seventeen minutes, he recorded two assists, two rebounds, and nine points. He was selected to the NBA All-Rookie second team that year.
In his second season, Giannis had a career-high game against the Houston Rockets, scoring 27 points with 15 rebounds. That performance earned him Eastern Conference Player of the Week and Player of the Week honors, both for the first time in his career. He was also selected for the NBA Slam Dunk Contest at NBA All-Star Weekend that year.
The following season, he scored almost 17 points per game and recorded his first triple-double, which was against the Golden State Warriors. This made Giannis the youngest in franchise history to record a triple-double. He then signed a contract worth an estimated $100 million over four years with the Bucks. That season he would go on to average almost 23 points, five assists, and nine rebounds per game. He was named to the All-NBA Second Team.
During the 2017–2018 season, he broke the franchise record for triple-doubles and received his second straight All-Star nomination and All-NBA selection. That season he averaged more than five assists and 12 rebounds with more than 27 points per game. During the next season, Antetokounmpo helped his team to have the best record in the NBA and to be the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. He was awarded the league’s Most Valuable Player, only the second Buck in history to receive the award. For the season, he averaged just under 28 points per game, along with an average of over five assists and almost 13 rebounds per game.
During the 2019-2020 season, which was dramatically affected by the coronavirus pandemic, Antetokounmpo averaged just under thirty points per game, in addition to having an average of over five assists and almost fourteen rebounds per game. He was named league MVP for the second time, only the third player in history to accomplish that feat.
The 2020-2021 season would prove to be the best yet for Antetokounmpo. He led his team to win the NBA Finals, his first, and he was named NBA Finals MVP by unanimous vote.
The most common nickname for Antetokounmpo is “Greek Freak,” sometimes written “GREEK FR34K” to include his number 34 jersey number.
Giannis Antetokounmpo obtained a federal trademark registration for “GREEK FREAK” in 2014. The application covers the use of the name on backpacks and clothing items that include shirts, hooded sweatshirts, jackets, jerseys, socks and warm up suits.
In 2020, Antetokounmpo filed a trademark application for “GREEK FREAK” for use in entertainment services. Specifically, these services include providing a website for on-line gambling, online computer games, and electronic games and gaming services pertaining to online games, e-games, and virtual reality games.
He also filed a trademark application in 2018 for “GREEK FR34K” to be used with a number of goods and services. These include fragrances for men after shave and hair and body wash for men. It also applied to nutritional, dietary and powdered supplements as well as energy boosting supplements. The application also covered use on backpacks as well as clothing like shirts, shoes, and warm up suits in addition to basketball-related items such as basketballs and basketball hoops, nets, and backboards. The application for “GREEK FR34K” also applied to snack foods and assorted types of beverages including coffees, teas, sodas, and sports drinks. Finally, it also covers promoting or endorsing the goods or services of others.
