Gardner Minshew is a professional football player. He plays for the Philadelphia Eagles as a backup quarterback.

Minshew started playing football at a young age. In the seventh grade, he had the opportunity to train with a high school coordinator who taught him wide-open passing concepts. Once enrolled at Brandon High School in Brandon, Mississippi, he played for their football team. He played quarterback but didn’t really see any time on the field as he was a backup during his freshman year. He was given the starting position during his sophomore year. That year he led his team to the 6A Mississippi Championship game, however, they lost. They did not make it back to the championships during his junior year, however, as a senior, he led the team to a South 6A championship.

Even though during his high school career he had 11,222 passing yards and 105 touchdowns, he was not highly sought after as a recruit. He committed to Troy University as an early enroll at Troy on an academic scholarship. He stayed there for one semester before transferring out to Northwest Mississippi Community College. He did not play football for Troy University.

Minshew played his first college-level football at Northwest Mississippi Community College, where he led the team to an NJCAA National Football Championship. At the end of that year, he transferred to East Carolina University, where he started two games and played in seven. The next year, as part of a two-quarterback system, he passed for more than 350 yards in three consecutive games late in the season. For the year, he had 16 touchdowns and passed for 2,140 yards.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University in December of 2017.

As a graduate transfer, under NCAA rules, Minshew would be immediately eligible to play at another university. At this time, there was a quarterback controversy at the University of Alabama, which led to speculation that former starting quarterback Jalen Hurts would leave the program. Due to this, Minshew was offered an opportunity to play for the nation’s top program. Once Hurts announced that he would be staying at Alabama, Minshew knew that he would not see the field as a third-string player behind both Hurts and the program’s starter Tua Tagovailoa.

Minshew was considering leaving school altogether to start his coaching career but instead was persuaded to play for Mike Leach at Washington State University. That year he led the team to 11 wins, which is a school record and an Alamo Bowl win over Iowa State. During the season, he threw for 4,477 yards with 38 touchdowns, breaking Jared Goff’s Pac-12 touchdown record. He won the award for Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

He attended the NFL Combine, where he had the second-highest Wonderlic test score of all of the quarterbacks. He was drafted in the sixth round (178th) by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Minshew was slated to be the backup for starting quarterback Nick Foles. Foles was injured in the team’s season opener and Minshew finished the game. Although the team lost, he passed for 275 yards with two touchdowns. In that game, he recorded the highest pass completion percentage of any quarterback in their debut game. His exciting play style and sudden popularity were referred to as “Minshew Mania.” He played well and his first professional win came two weeks later against the Tennessee Titans, and the following week defeated the Denver Broncos. In week 10, Foles returned to the team, and Minshew was demoted to backup, but after Foles was benched for poor play in week 13, Minshew was named the starter again. Minshew played in 14 games during the 2019 season. He had 21 touchdowns and six interceptions while throwing for 3,271 yards.

Before the 2020 season, Nick Foles was traded to the Chicago Bears and Minshew was named starting quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Minshew had a strong start to the season before injuring his thumb and missing almost two months of football. Minshew returned and played against the Tennessee Titans, after his replacement Mike Glennon was benched. The next week, Minshew was named the starter but did not perform well and was benched in favor of Glennon the following week.

At the beginning of the 2021 season, Minshew was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles for a conditional sixth-round draft pick. He is the backup for starting quarterback Jalen Hurts. He played briefly in one game for the Eagles, where he completed both passes that he threw.

In 2019, Gardner Minshew filed a trademark application for “MINSHEW MANIA” to cover use on clothing items which include tops, bottoms, socks, hats and sweatpants, and many others, designated for human beings of all ages and genders.

He also filed a trademark application for “MINSHEW MAGIC” and “MISSISSIPPI MUSTACHE” for the same purposes.
