Coca-Cola Files Trademark Application for ‘Spricy’
Less than a year after pulling Coca-Cola Spiced from store shelves, Coca-Cola is signaling it may not be finished experimenting with spicy beverages. The company has filed a trademark application for ‘Spricy,’ indicating it intends to use the name on soft drinks.
The company filed the application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on July 9, stating it has a “bona fide intent” to use the trademark in connection with soft drinks.
While the filing does not confirm that a product launch is imminent, it is a common step companies take to secure exclusive rights to a brand name before bringing a product to market.
By filing the application, Coca-Cola establishes a priority date that prevents competitors from adopting and using the same or a similar name.
The filing comes after Coca-Cola’s previous attempt to capitalize on spicy-inspired flavors. The company introduced Coca-Cola Spiced in 2024, but the beverage had a short run and was discontinued in 2025.
The USPTO is expected to review the application over the next five to six months. During that process, a trademark examiner for the USPTO will determine whether ‘Spricy’ conflicts with any existing registrations or pending applications.
If no conflicting trademarks are found, the application would receive a conditional approval. However, because the filing is based on Coca-Cola’s stated intent to use the mark rather than current commercial use, the company would ultimately need to begin selling products under the ‘Spricy’ name before the trademark can be fully registered.
For now, the filing offers one of the clearest indications yet that Coca-Cola may be exploring another spicy-themed beverage concept.
