Orlando Magic Signal Logo Overhaul with 15 New Trademark Filings

The Orlando Magic may be preparing for a major rebrand.

On June 2nd, the team filed 15 new trademark applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), each tied to potential new logos. The most notable change? The iconic trail behind the basketball — a key part of the Magic’s logo since 2000 — is gone.

From 1989 until 2000, the Magic’s branding featured a star-themed basketball without a trail. But starting in 2001, the team introduced a new logo with a stylized motion trail meant to evoke speed and energy. Now, based on four of the new logo designs, it appears the franchise may be reverting to a simpler look by removing the trail altogether.

What remains unclear is whether these new logos are intended to replace the current primary emblem seen on uniforms and merchandise, or if they will be used in conjunction with the existing brand. But the sheer volume of filings — and the range of use cases they cover — suggest the team is planning to make a significant update.

All of the filings were submitted on what’s known as an “intent to use” basis, a specific designation under U.S. trademark law. This means that while the Magic are not yet using these logos publicly, they’ve filed sworn declarations stating they have a bona fide intent to use the trademarks in commerce in the near future.

This filing basis is important. Under U.S. law, companies can’t register trademarks they have no plans to use. The “intent to use” application allows trademark owners to secure rights in a mark before launching it — but they must eventually prove that they are actually using the mark to complete the registration process.

In short, the trademark filings suggest that the Magic aren’t just exploring options — they’re formally putting plans in motion to launch new branding.

If these filings are any indication, fans could see a new look take the court as early as the 2025–2026 NBA season.
