A Look at the Trademark Portfolio of the Chicago Bears

One of the two remaining franchises that belonged to the founding NFL, who has called their home Chicago since 1921, are the Chicago Bears. The Bears compete in the National Football League in the NFC North division and play at Soldier Field, adjacent to Lake Michigan. The team was originally named the Decatur Staleys and then the Chicago Staleys, before coming up with their current name, the Chicago Bears. They came up with the name based off Chicago’s baseball team, the Cubs.

The Chicago Bears’ wishbone ‘C’ logo has gone generally unchanged since the 1960’s, along with their uniforms that have received very little changes since inception of the franchise. The color scheme of the jerseys has changed from red jerseys with brown stripes, to the current colors of orange and navy blue (inspired by the Bears founder’s alma mater, the University of Illinois).

The first series of trademark filings the Bears made were in December of 1971, including the word mark CHICAGO BEARS, four variations of logos, a bear logo and BEARS word mark. Since, the Chicago Bears have filed several updated word marks and logos, as well as slogans, such as ‘Da Bears’, ‘Be Obsessed’, and ‘Finish on the Field’.

The Bears also filed for their famous nickname, ‘Monsters of the Midway’, in October of 2001. The team first received this nickname for their dominance in the 1940 and 1941 football seasons. The name re-emerged with the dominant defense of the Chicago Bears during their 1985 season. That season they went 15-1 and then went on to defeat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.
