A Look at the Trademarks Owned by the Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics were founded in 1946 as one of the NBA’s original eight teams. They are considered the most successful basketball team in history, winning about a fourth of all NBA championships. They are also one of only two teams that have never left their home city, so they have been able to keep their trademarks relatively consistent.

The Celtics original logo was a simple white shamrock with “Celtics” above it, but that was not a registered trademark at the time. Created in 1968, and registered in 1972, the logo features Lucky the Leprechaun spinning a basketball and was originally designed by the brother of head coach Red Auerbach. Red Auerbach is known for starting the Celtics’ dynasty after acquiring center, Bill Russell.  Lucky has been the face of the Celtics’ for nearly fifty years, and he got the full color treatment in 1996; however, his full color self has never been protected with the USPTO. The simple white shamrock is still the Celtics alternate logo, and is often used to brand sporting equipment, playing cards, and even phone cases.

Two of the trademarks the Celtics are pursuing is their own NBA 2k team – CLTX (where the T is a stylized shamrock) and Celtics Crossover Gaming. These trademarks are common amongst NBA teams since e-sports are on the rise, and the NBA 2k teams can easily ally themselves with their in-person counterpart. The CLTX began their season this summer, so their trademark for gaming entertainment is active, but have not yet started selling merchandise with the branding, so their merchandise trademark is still only intent to use.

Another trademark, filed May 2019, was for C US RISE – the motto during the 2019 playoff run. This trademark is currently pending, but the NBA store as well as unauthorized retailers are currently selling apparel with the mark. Since the playoffs were over a year ago, it is not clear if the Celtics intend to enforce their rights to this mark.
