Our Texas continuing legal education courses focus on intellectual property law, more specifically trademarks. While you may not realize it, intellectual property can be found in every industry, as each business has at least one protectable trademark – their name. Our courses provide basic, but important information surrounding trademark law, allowing you to speak knowledgeably on the topic and perhaps provide added value to your clients.
Attorneys who have been licensed in Texas for two years or more are required to complete 15 hours of continuing legal education yearly. Three of the required hours must pertain to legal ethics and/or professionalism, while the additional 12 can pertain to general legal knowledge.
Continuing legal education promotes continuing professional development for attorneys, allowing them to maintain or deepen their skills or learn something new in the field of law.
Attorneys in Texas can acquire their Texas MCLE credits by attending continuing legal education courses that have been approved and accredited by the State Bar of Texas MCLE Department. Courses can be taken in a variety of formats, from live classes or webinars to previously recorded audio or video content. If they wish, Texas attorneys can fulfill all of their CLE credits online.
Texas attorneys can also satisfy their CLE credit requirements through self-study. A maximum of three CLE credits can be fulfilled through self-study and one of those three credits can be ethics-based. Self-study credits can be acquired by reading peer-reviewed, legal publications or by attending non-accredited CLE activities.
For attorneys licensed for two years or more in the state of Texas, their compliance deadline is the last day of the month preceding their birth month. Texas attorneys have until the last day of their birth month to report their compliance.
MCLE stands for mandatory (or minimum) continuing legal education and is just a different name for CLEs.
Yes, in Texas, attorneys can roll CLE credits for 12 months. Attorneys in Texas can roll over up to 15 general subject credits and three ethical/professional responsibility credits per year.
The first compliance period for newly licensed attorneys is 24 months. The 24 month period starts on the first day of the attorney’s birth month after they have been licensed and ends two years later, on the last day of the month preceding their birth month.
Texas attorneys are required to report their own attendance. Attorneys can report their CLE attendance at any time by logging in to their “My Bar” page on the Texas State Bar website. Once logged in, click “My MCLE” account and select “Add Attendance.” Enter the nine-digit course number provided by the sponsor.
Accredited Texas MCLE sponsors are also required to report attendance for their activity, however they are not obligated to meet an attorney’s deadline. Texas attorney’s are responsible to ensure that all MCLE attendance is reported before their reporting deadline.

No, Texas attorneys do not need to file a yearly attendance report at the end of their compliance year. However, the Texas State Bar will send a MCLE Annual Verification Report to each licensed attorney eight weeks prior to their birth month. This report will show the attorney’s reported attendance and calculates how many hours the attorney owes for that compliance year. Texas attorneys should review this report to ensure all MCLE credits have been reported. If any additions or corrections are needed, they can be completed online in the attorney’s My Bar account.
