Jason’s Deli is a fast-casual restaurant dealing in meals using innovative ingredients made without artificial trans fats. The company is headquartered in Beaumont, Texas, serving over 90 varieties of sandwiches together with salads, soups, desserts, box meals, wraps, and baked potatoes.
The family-run business has restaurants only on U.S. soil, cutting across 28 states and 250 locations. According to the company, the aim is to serve communities that the family and business have known for over 40 years. They put a lot of careful thought into the food and its nutritional benefits to the consumer.
Let’s look into the company’s history, its unique menu, and trademarks.
Jason’s Deli Company History
Jason’s Deli was founded on November 30, 1976, by Joe Tortorice Jr., along with partners Pete Verde, Rusty Coco, and Pat Broussard. The delicatessen was named after Tortorice’s eldest son.
Joe and Rusty had extensive business experience, having grown up around the food business. Their fathers owned and ran grocery stores in the Beaumont area.
The first Jason’s Deli location was opened in Beaumont, Texas, and is still operational today.
In 1978, Jason’s Deli launched the New Orleans Muffaletta, its signature sandwich. Two years later, in 1980, the company introduced its famous Salad Bar.
Jason’s Deli’s step into healthy food and eating started in 1980 after securing a partnership with the Heart Institute of St. Elizabeth Hospital to create heart-healthy menu choices. That set up the lifelong company ethos of serving healthy food only and the steps it has taken to achieve this goal, such as not using artificial trans fats in its restaurants.
In 1982, Jason’s Deli stretched its wings and expanded into Tyler, Texas. Six years later, in 1988, the company started franchising, opening its first franchised store in Tucson, Arizona. Expansion continued rapidly, with the restaurant chain opening several stores across the U.S.
In 1999, Jason’s Deli took a technological gamble and introduced online ordering. This was in line with the dot com boom and the surge of the internet and the world wide web.
Despite the drive for healthy foods and a health-focused menu, Jason’s Deli did not introduce a vegetarian menu item until 2005. This same year, Jason’s Deli stopped using partially hydrogenated oils, a big source of artificial trans fats.
Another significant shift and push for a healthier menu came in 2006 after the restaurant chain launched its first menus indicating all USDA-Certified organic ingredients.
In 2007, Jason’s Deli opened its first neighborhood store in Flower Mound, Texas. By 2008, the company would see tremendous growth, ranking first in annual sales according to QSR Magazine’s Top Ten list of restaurant groups running less than 300 locations.
Most of these locations were owned and operated by Deli Management Inc., Jason Deli’s parent company. That same year, the company opened its first pickup window at Beaumont-Dowlen Road.
In 2010, Jason’s Deli made another health-driven menu change, banning artificial dyes and colors. The move started with the kid’s menu. That same year, the restaurant chain also introduced vegan and gluten-sensitive menus to cater to a broader set of consumers.
In 2014, Jason’s Deli teamed up with MD Anderson Cancer Center nutritionists to develop a healthier menu.
The first Jason’s Deli drive-thru concept was launched in 2015. Dubbed Jason’s Express, the company stated that it introduced a better way to eat while on the go.
As of September 2019, the company operated 295 locations in 29 states.
Jason’s Deli Menu
Jason’s Deli menu offers typical deli-style items, including traditional sandwiches such as muffulettas and Po’boys. Each deli offers a daily soup selection and a salad bar. Jason’s Deli locations also serve other items such as pasta, baked potatoes, and salads.
As part of its drive for healthy food, the company completed its five-year elimination plan for added trans fats in April 2005. The restaurant chain also eliminated high fructose corn syrup from its menu in October 2008. Later, it also dropped MSG from the menu. Jason’s Deli outlets also recently started offering gluten-free products.
The fast-casual delicatessen also provides free ice cream for its customers.
Jason’s Deli’s sandwiches have put the company in the spotlight several times. In 2008, the company won the 2008 Nation’s Restaurant News Golden Chain Award. It also won the 2007 award from Restaurants & Institutions and the 2006 Consumer’s Choice in Chains Gold Award.
Jason’s Deli Trademarks
