Buc-ee’s is a chain of country stores and gas stations spread across the U.S. The company offers its customers food, gifts, beverages, and fuel in its locations in Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, South Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee.

There were plans for an additional location in North Carolina, but they were shelved in early 2021. Arch “Beaver” Aplin II and Don Wasek own the company, headquartered in Lake Jackson, Texas.

Let’s look at this company’s history, expansion outside Texas, and trademarks.

Buc-ee’s History

Arch “Beaver” Aplin II, the founder of Buc-ee’s, opened his first store in 1982, in the town of Clute, Texas. That store is still operational to date.

He coined the name Buc-ee’s from several sources, including his childhood nickname and the name of his Labrador Retriever – Buck. He also appreciated the appeal of the animated mascot, Bucky the Beaver, who repped Ipana toothpaste, and wanted to incorporate a similar mascot.

Buc-ee’s started expanding and in 2001 it opened its first travel center in Luling, Texas. The travel center’s concept featured large stores with fuel pumps ranging from 80 to 120 fueling positions for gas and diesel vehicles.

Some stores also include DEF and ethanol-free fuels.

Buc-ee’s also sells a large selection of fresh sandwiches, jerky, tacos, pastries, fudge, Dippin’ Dots, and other items.

2012 marked a massive milestone for the company, when it opened its largest travel center, located on Interstate 35 in New Braunfels, Texas. The store is the largest convenience store in the world, with a footprint of 68,000 square feet. The location is host to 120 fueling positions, 64 ice freezers, 1,000 parking spots, 31 cash registers, 83 toilets, 80 fountain dispensers, and four Icee machines.

The New Braunfels location also features water and tubing gear to enjoy on the nearby Guadalupe River. In 2012, Cintas named the location the “Best Restroom in America.”

Buc-ee’s continued rapidly expanding in the greater Houston area and throughout Central Texas. On June 22, 2015, the company opened a location in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex in Terrel, Texas, another significant expansion for the convenience chain. This travel center is located on Interstate 20, just three miles west of Tanger Outlets.

The company announced in September 2015 that part of its headquarters operations would move to a new office space in Pearland Town Center. 

On May 23, 2016, Buc-ee’s opened a second store in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. It is located opposite the Texas Motor Speedway, in far north Fort Worth. Buc-ee’s opened a third location within the metroplex in October of 2018, this time in Denton, Texas.

On February 5, 2018, Buc-ee’s broke ground for a new Texas location in Melissa. The new store, which opened at the end of April 2019, is located off New Davis Road on U.S. Highway 75.

Buc-ee’s Expansion Outside Texas

Buc-ee’s wanted to start expanding outside of Texas, so in March 2016 it announced a possible new location in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. However, plans for its first location outside of Texas were terminated in October 2016, a few months from the expected opening timeframe of early 2017.

On April 12, 2017, the company announced a new plan to open its first gas station/convenience store outside Texas, this time in Daytona Beach, Florida. The store was to be located on the north side of LPGA Boulevard, east of Interstate 95, across Tanger Outlets, immediately west of Stonewood Grill & Tavern.

Despite construction starting in the summer of 2018, delays in the project pushed the completion date well into 2021. Buc-ee’s also announced another out-of-Texas location near St. Augustine, Florida. It became the first store to open on February 23, 2021, with the Daytona location following on March 22, 2021.

Buc-ee’s also broke ground for additional locations in 2018. These locations included Baldwin County, Alabama, which became its first officially opened location outside Texas. In June 2019, the company broke ground to a second Alabama location along Interstate 20 in Leeds, close to Barber Motorsports Park.

The company’s first store in Georgia would be placed at Warner Robins near Interstate 75’s interchange and Russel Parkway. Warner Robins was a great choice because of its central location between Florida and Atlanta. It also has seen fast population growth and houses the Robins Air Force Base.

On November 18, 2020, the Warner Robins location opened precisely one year after the groundbreaking, bringing 200 jobs to the area. The store in World Golf Village, North East Florida, opened in February 2021, bringing 250 jobs to the area. The third store in Georgia, located in Calhoun at exit 310 on Interstate 75, brought 175 jobs to the area.

Buc-ee’s Trademarks

Buc-ee’s has obtained or sought federal trademark registration for about 60 trademarks. These include “BEAVER NUGGETS,” “CLEAN EARTH,” and “BUC-AROOS.”

“BUC-AROOS” is the company’s latest trademark application. Buc-ee’s sought federal trademark registration for “BUC-AROOS” on May 27, 2022, and intends to use the trademark for its cookies.

Buc-ee’s also sought federal trademark registration for “CLEAN EARTH” in 2018. The company intends to use the trademark for its tea-based, energy, and non-alcoholic drinks.
