New York Islanders Trademarks
April 8, 2021
The New York Islanders are one of two New York NHL teams, and they compete in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference. Since there are three teams in the New York and Northern New Jersey area, the Islanders fan base is limited to Long Island. The team was founded in 1972, and shortly after its inception, was very successful and won four Stanley Cups in a row from 1980-1983. Since the franchise won those four Stanley Cups, they have not yet found victory again.
Even though the team’s name seems simple, the first logo was intricate enough so that only the most dedicated fans saw all the details. Most notably, the Y of NY turns into a hockey stick at the bottom. However, what most people do not know is that the team name at the bottom is written so that the tip of the “I” points to Uniondale, home of the Nassau Coliseum where the team plays.
In 1995, the team attempted to rebrand, and it was incredibly unsuccessful. The logo was a fisherman holding hockey stick, and fans thought it so closely resembled the Gorton’s fisherman that the Rangers’ fans started chanted “we want fish sticks.” Unfortunately for the Islanders, the taunts lasted longer than the logo, which was phased out by 1997.
The Islanders have a limited trademark portfolio since they have had limited rebranding over time. However, they did still keep their fisherman fail logo active. While the team has not registered it for a trademark (and it is unlikely to ever get copied due to a likelihood of confusion), the newest NY Islanders logo has four stripes on the hockey stick instead of three – one for each Stanley Cup win.
The most recent marks the Islanders have filed are for “From the Barn to the Bank” and “From the Barn to the Stable.” It appears that New York Islanders’ new stadium already has a name, and From the Barn to the Bank/Stable is referencing the future move for Islanders fans when they’re able to return to in person games.
