The New Jersey Devils play hockey in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference of the NHL. The franchise was originally founded in Kansas City, Missouri as the “Kansas City Scouts” in 1974. In 1976, the team moved to Colorado and became the Colorado Rockies. It was not until 1982 that the team found itself in New Jersey and was renamed the New Jersey Devils. The final move for the Devils came in 2007 when they settled in Newark instead of East Rutherford.

The franchise did not succeed while in New Jersey for about the first five years. However, in the 90s and early 2000s, the team hit their stride and won three Stanley Cup Championships in 1995, 2000, and 2003. The Devils are one of three teams in the New York metropolitan area and have a natural rivalry with the New York Rangers. Since all other teams in New Jersey identify as New York teams, the Devils are the last standing team acknowledging New Jersey as its home state.

The Devil’s logo is an N and a J combined, with horns and a tail. The original logo was red with a green outline, but the green was changed to black in 1992 due to technical issues with color consistency. The team’s mascot is the NJ Devil who was created in 1993.

Since the team is the only NJ specific team, they have registered the trademark for Jersey’s Team, as well as the NJ logos. The team does not have a large trademark portfolio, but they have registered trademarks for both their mascot and the popular phrase “Devil’s Den.”
