The Dallas Stars are the only NHL team that play in Texas, and that play in the Central Division of the Western Conference. The Stars were founded as part of the 1967 NHL expansion, but they were called the “Minnesota North Stars.” Due to financial difficulties, just before the 1978 season, the team was forced to merge with the Cleveland Barons. The team did not land in Dallas until just before the 1993 season and did not play in their current stadium until 2001. During their time in Dallas, the Stars have won eight division titles, two Presidents’ Trophies, two Conference championships, and the Stanley Cup in 1998.

Despite the team’s success, the franchise has room to improve its intellectual property portfolio. The Stars have filed for their name and their logos, but not much else. However, the team did file for “5:MM,” which is their “5 Minute Major” t-shirt brand. An interesting thing to note about the 5:MM application is that the Stars openly limited their retail area to Texas and the surrounding states. In the team’s press release in 2014, it was announced that the brand was for the loyal Dallas fans, so it makes sense that the primary retail area is within Texas.
