The Columbus Blue Jackets play in the NHL as a member of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference and are based in Columbus, Ohio. The Blue Jackets did not have the best start, and they did not even win thirty games in a season until 5 years after their founding. The team eventually won their first playoff game after over a decade of playing, but they have yet to win a Division Championship, a Presidents’ Trophy, a Conference Championship, or the coveted Stanley Cup.

The name and logos of the Blue Jackets are inspired by Ohio’s participation in the Civil War. In 1997, the team held a “Name the Team” competition, and there were over 14,000 entries. These 14,000 were narrowed down to ten names, and after the owner considered Ohio’s contributions to the Union Army in the Civil War, it was narrowed further to the Blue Jackets or the Justice. Ultimately, the Columbus Blue Jackets were born.

Despite the lack of success of the franchise, the fan base is still enthusiastic and loyal. In the teams’ first playoff appearance and victory, the team started the “5th Line.” A play on the well-known “12th Man” in football, the 5th Line represents the fans. In addition to the fan nickname, the Blue Jackets have emphasized their Civil War heritage in their trademark portfolio. The team first filed a trademark for the Union blue cap in 2003, and since then, they have registered five caps and two cannon marks.

Unrelated to the civil war history, the teams’ mascot is more of a play on the term “Blue Jacket.” Stinger the “Yellow Jacket” (who is actually more green) was registered by the team in 2004. In addition to Stinger, the Blue Jackets attempted a new mascot called “Boomer the Cannon;” however, due to his lack of success, he lasted less than half a season and was never registered.
