The Chicago Blackhawks (previously known as Black Hawks until 1986) play in the NHL in the Central Division of the Western Conference. The Hawks are one of the “Original Six” teams and have won six Stanley Cup Championships for their franchise.

Recently, teams have been under the microscope for racist names or imagery. The Blackhawks state they have no plans to change their name because the nickname honors an actual Native American Individual – Black Hawk of Illinois’ Sac & Fox Nation. The team got the idea to honor Black Hawk because the team’s founder served in the U.S. 86th Infantry Division in World War I which was nicknamed the “Blackhawk Division.” Despite the Blackhawk’s opinion of their name, in 2019 the American Indian Center has split from the team and no longer will support any use of “Indian mascots.”

The Blackhawks were founded in 1926, and they have retained the same logo since it was created by Irene Castle, the wife of the team’s founder. The team registered both its name and logo in 1970.  In addition, in the 1990s, the team filed to protect phrases associated with the team like “Hawk Talk” and “Cold Steel on Ice.” In the 2000s, the team began to focus on its charity work, and filed for “Four Feathers,” “A Step aHead,” and most recently, “Chicago Blackhawks Foundation.”
