The Buffalo Sabres currently play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the NHL. The team was founded in 1970. The Sabres were part of the NHL expansion to bring the league to 14 teams, and we added along with the Vancouver Canucks. They have played in the Stanley Cup Finals twice but have not yet won the title. They first lost to the Philadelphia Flyers in 1975 and then the Dallas Stars in 1999. The current Sabres have the longest running playoff drought in the NHL, at a full nine seasons without playing in the postseason.
For the most part, the Sabres have used the same logo for their franchise. The primary logo features a bison atop two crossed sabres in a blue circle with gold trim. The original logo was used from 1970-1996, and in honor of completing their 50th season, will be brought back after their 2020 season. The team has also stuck to the same uniform colors for the early part of their career – the blue, gold, and white. However, when the team switched arenas, they also switched to red, black, and silver, and replaced the logo with the more modern “bison head.”
Since the Sabres have not changed their image much over their fifty years, their trademark portfolio is relatively small. At its inception, the team filed a trademark for its original logo, and then in 1995 filed for the second bison head logo. In 2006, the Bison got a sleeker look, and that was registered as well. The biggest outlier in the Sabres trademark portfolio is the “French Connection” mark. This was registered in 2018 and represents the best-known line for the team. The line consisted of three players, all of whose numbers are retired and now honored by a statue that was erected in 2012.
