The Washington Commanders are a Washington metropolitan based football team and a member of the NFC East.
Founded in 1932, the team was originally based in Boston and called the Braves. They changed their name to the Washington Redskins just one year after the team was created, and they later relocated to their home of Washington, D.C. in 1937. After nearly ninety years of playing, the team has won five NFL Championships and played over 1000 games. They are considered to be one of the most valuable franchises in the NFL and one of the most profitable sports teams in the world.
More recently, the team experienced heavy backlash for their name and logo. The National Congress of American Indians has criticized the “redskins” term and views it as a racial slur. In addition, the team’s logo uses the likeness of a Native American based on the image on the Buffalo nickel, a five-cent coin used in the early 1900s. The team filed a trademark application for the name in 1966 and the logo six years later in 1972. These registrations protect the name and logo in association with entertainment services, namely football games.
Following the nationwide protests that erupted after the killing of George Floyd, major sponsors like Nike, FedEx, Pepsi and more requested the name be changed. The team temporarily changed their name to Washington Football Team, while trying to decide on a new name.
In February 2022, the team officially changed their name to the Washington Commanders and released new logos.
