The Phoenix Suns were founded in 1968 in the NBA’s Western Conference Pacific Division. The Suns are the only team in this division not based in California. Upon their founding, the team was named by a contest open to the public. There were over 28,000 entries, and the name Suns was chosen instead of Scorpions, Rattlers, and Thunderbirds. The person who submitted the winning name was gifted $1,000 and season tickets.
Despite having renowned players like Charles Barkley, the team has never won an NBA Championship. However, the fans have found other points of the team to rally around, including the mascot born out of an accident. The Suns’ mascot is a gorilla, who was invited into the stadium as a singing telegram for a fan. The gorilla ended up dancing and was a big hit, so he kept coming back until he was officially invited. The mascot was only named after his official adoption, and he is known as Go. The team did try for a sunflower mascot at one point, but no one liked it as much as Go.
Possible as an attempt to boost morale and change the momentum towards winning, the Suns have filed three trademarks as an intent to use in 2020 alone. The team appears to be rebranding around the Valley imagery – with phrases such as “Rally the Valley,” “We are the Valley,” and “Valley Strong.” These valley references are about state pride since there are over fifty valleys in Arizona.
While the team has been changing popular phrases, the logo has remained mostly unchanged. There team has a lot of trademarks that are variations of a basketball as the center of a sun – maybe not the most creative, but definitely convey the name and sport well.
