The Oklahoma City Thunder play in the NBA’s Western Conference Northwest Division. They are the only major sports team to be located in Oklahoma – except for the New Orleans Hornets two-year stint. However, they were not always located there. Before the 2007 season, the team played in Seattle and was named the SuperSonics. The SuperSonics were founded in 1967, and played there for forty years.
When the team moved, fans voted on potential names from a list of 64 options. The team was prepared to use many of these names, and filed intent to use applications for the SuperSonics, the Marshalls, the Energy, the Wind, the Barons, and the Bisons. Ultimately, the team decided to go with Thunder because of the imagery and the in-game experience opportunities.
The original logo of the OKC Thunder incorporated several elements from other non-professional Oklahoma sports teams, such as the Sooners. The color scheme of the Thunder – orange and blue – are also inspired by Oklahoma’s Native American Heritage. While the team works to protect its brand, the trademarks are not owned by the team like most organizations. The owner of the registered trademarks is “The Professional Basketball Club, LLC.”
In addition to their logos and name, the organization has filed for different words and causes. In 2004, the Thunder filed for NEIGHBORHOOPS which is the name of their charitable organization. In 2006, OKC Thunder registered for NOT IN OUR HOUSE for apparel, but it may not have been as successful as they hoped, since the trademark was abandoned in 2008. Most recently, during the Coronavirus pandemic, the team went through the effort to file an intent to use application for RECESS WITH RUMBLE, obviously taking advantage of the break from in-person activity.
