Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, more commonly known as The Weeknd, is a top-selling, award-winning artist from Canada. He has made four studio albums, three mixtapes, and one extended play, along with more than 50 singles, and has sold more than 75 million albums. He has won numerous American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Juno Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and Grammy Awards. He is best known for his songs “I Feel It Coming,” “Blinding Lights,” and “Can’t Feel My Face.”
Through his company, XO Trademarks LLC, The Weeknd obtained a federal trademark registration for “THE WEEKND” to be used with sound recordings, digital sound recordings, and downloadable sound and video recordings in 2013. The application also covers use on clothing, such as t-shirts, jackets, shirts, and more, as well as entertainment services such as live performances. The Weeknd also filed a federal trademark application for a logo with the letters “XO” and a heart for similar purposes.
In 2013, The Weeknd applied to register a trademark for a logo, which is a caricature of a cat, for use on sound recordings including downloadable sound and video recordings as well as clothing, such as t-shirts, jackets, shirts, and other items. Later that same year, he also applied for a trademark registration of a second cat caricature logo for the same purposes.
In 2016, he applied for a trademark for the phrase “KING OF THE FALL,” as well as a second application for the initials “KOTF,” for use on clothing, such as t-shirts, jackets, shirts, and more, as well as entertainment services. Some of the entertainment services include but are not limited to, live performances and live concerts, websites featuring entertainment and music, organizing of concerts, and non-downloadable digital music.
In 2019, The Weeknd applied for a trademark for “XO RECORDS” to cover use with sound recordings such as digital music, downloadable digital music, and video recordings featuring music. He also filed an application for “XO RECORDS” for use with men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing items. He also filed a trademark application for “XO RECORDS” for music composition, production, and publishing services as well as media production services like video and film production and the production of music videos. In 2019, he filed another application, this time for the “XO” logo, to be used for all the same purposes. Additionally, he has applied for a trademark for the “XO” logo to be used on mugs and flasks, ashtrays and cigarette cases, and ongoing, online radio programming.
The Weekend first applied for a trademark for “MANIC PHASE” in 2019, to cover digital media such as prerecorded DVDs and CDS as well as motion picture films. He also filed trademark applications for “MANIC PHASE” to be used on clothing items such as shirts, jerseys, bandanas, and more, and to be used for music composition, production, and publishing services.
In 2019, he filed multiple applications for the phrase “MANIC PHASE CINEMA.” This phrase is to be used with digital media like CDs, DVDs, and downloadable multimedia, assorted clothing items, film production, and distribution and multimedia entertainment services, and digital media in the nature of animated motion picture films, as well as animated film development, production and distribution.
In 2020, The Weeknd applied for a federal trademark registration for “MANIC PHASE” to cover use with online video games, computer game software, home video games, and more, as well as for use in books like manuscripts, screenplays, and others. He also applied for a trademark registration for “MANIC PHASE CINEMA” for these additional purposes.
The Weeknd also submitted a trademark application for “MANIC PHASE INTERACTIVE” and “MANIC PHASE SOFTWARE” to cover use with computer game software, home video games, and more. Additionally, he filed a trademark application for “MANIC PHASE MEDIA” to cover use with broadcasting, video on demand services, and streaming video over the internet. The Weeknd also filed a trademark application for “MANIC PHASE TELEVISION” for use in the production of television programs, as well as other multimedia entertainment services in the field of television. He applied for a trademark for “MANIC PHASE DESIGN” for use with the design of many types of home and lifestyle goods.
The Weeknd has also applied for federal trademark registrations for other phrases associated with or related to “Manic Phase,” including “MANIC PHASE BOOKS,” “MANIC PHASE PRODUCTION” and “MANIC PHASE DOCUMENTARY.”
In 2020, he filed a trademark application for “NOT ALOXNE” for use for charitable fundraising services. He also applied for a trademark for “NOT ALXONE to be used on clothing like t-shirts tank tops, jackets, and shoes.
