Alexander “Alex” Pall and Andrew “Drew” Taggart are an electronic DJ and production duo who are known as The Chainsmokers.

Pall and former DJ, Rhett Bixler, were the original Chainsmokers. After Bixler split, the Chainsmokers re-formed with Pall and Taggart in New York City in 2012. They were managed by Adam Alpert.

Before they formed the Chainsmokers, Pall, who is originally from New York City, was majoring in music business and art history at New York University. Meanwhile, Taggart, who is from Freeport, Maine, was interning at Interscope Records, while attending Syracuse University. Prompted by a mutual acquaintance, Taggart went to New York City to meet with Alpert and Pall. The meeting eventually led to them making remixes of indie bands. They found some early success working with Priyanka Chopra on her single “Erase” (2012), and then “The Rookie” (2013). They hit number one on HypeMachine with their remix of “Medicine” by English indie-folk trio, Daughter.

Pall and Taggart’s first performance as the Chainsmokers was at Hell’s Kitchen’s Terminal 5, opening for the American pop duo, Timeflies. Their single “#Selfie” (2013) charted internationally, bringing them their first major breakthrough. They followed this with “Kanye” (2014) and “Let You Go” (2015). They were signed to Alpert’s recording label, Disruptor Records.

They released “Good Intentions” in May of 2015 and “Roses” in June. It went on to be a Billboard top ten hit and was a major commercial success. 2015 also saw the release of their singles “Waterbed” and “Until You Were Gone.” These singles are included on The Chainsmokers’ first EP titled Bouquet, along with the final single, “New York City.”

The Chainsmokers 2016 collaboration with Daya, “Don’t Let Me Down” was a top-five hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Later that year, they performed at the Ultra Music Festival. They released “Inside Out” (2016), which went to number 13 on the US Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. Their next single featured Halsey and was titled “Closer” (2016). It was a number one hit in thirteen countries including the United States. To round out the year, they released the single “All We Know” and their second EP, Collage.

Their first single of 2017 was “Paris” which is also the lead single on their debut studio album, Memories…Do Not Open. Other singles included “Something Just Like This,” featuring Coldplay, and “The One.” The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and they supported the album with a forty-city tour called The Memories Do Not Open Tour. Then The Chainsmokers announced a three-year residency in Las Vegas at Wynn-owned nightclubs, XS Las Vegas, and Encore Beach Club, which would run through 2019.

The lead single and title track from their second studio album was “Sick Boy” (2018). Nine other singles were released from the album, including “You Owe Me,” “Somebody” and “Beach House.”

In 2019, The Chainsmokers collaborated with 5 Seconds of Summer on the single “Who Do You Love.” The single went platinum in the United States and is included on their third studio album, World War Joy (2019). The second single from the album was “Kills You Slowly.” They performed at the 2019 Ultra Music Festival Australia and Lollapalooza 2019. From September 2019 through December 2019, they toured 41 cities with 5 Seconds of Summer to support their World War Joy album.

The Chainsmokers have also launched a film production company, named Kick the Habit Productions, and Alpert serves as the company’s CEO. One project they have worked on is a movie named Paris inspired by their hit song. Additionally, they have announced their work on a TV drama titled Demo for Freeform. They are producing the show and working with writer, Joy Gregory.

The Chainsmokers took a break from social media in early 2020, in order to focus on their music. After having been out of the spotlight during their social media hiatus and the COVID-19 pandemic, they returned to the stage with a charity concert called Safe & Sound.

Aside from Pall and Taggart, Matt McGuire is a drummer and music director for live shows for the Chainsmokers and Tony Ann played keyboard on their Memories…Do Not Open Tour and has some songwriting credits with the group as well.

The Chainsmokers are also the co-owners of the Tequila brand JAJA.

In 2012, the Chainsmokers filed a trademark application for their name “THE CHAINSMOKERS” to be used for entertainment services including live musical performances as well as the production and recording of music.

In 2014, they obtained a federal trademark registration for their name for use with clothing items including athletic shorts, hats and caps, and t-shirts with short or long sleeves. The Chainsmokers also obtained a federal trademark registration for their name to be used on cell phone cases in 2014.
