Lil Nas X is a rapper. His most popular song to date, “Old Town Road,” has stayed at number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart longer than any other song in history.
Montero Lamar Hill was born in Lithia Springs, Georgia on April 9, 1999. After his parents divorced, he lived first with his mother and grandmother in Atlanta, Georgia, before living with his father in Austell, Georgia. He went to Lithia Springs High School, and after graduation, he attended the University of West Georgia for computer science. Hill left university to pursue a music career. He lived with his sister and supported himself with part-time entry-level jobs.
In his later teenage years, Hill worked hard to become an internet personality and while he found some traction with Nicki Minaj fan accounts, he failed to reach viral status. In 2018, he started to pursue music even more seriously, creating his moniker, “Lil Nas X” in tribute to the legendary rapper “Nas.”
“Nasarati” was Hill’s first mixtape and it was released in mid-2018 on SoundCloud. The mixtape never had a chance to gain traction, as it was pulled from distribution shortly after the release of “Old Town Road” because of a copyright conflict.
Hill’s first major hit came with the release “Old Town Road” in late 2018. It cost him less than $50 to record the song and he self-promoted the single with memes on social media. The immediate viral success of the song was boosted by its use in the #Yeehaw Challenge on TikTok. The song landed on the Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, Hot Country Songs chart, and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.
After being heavily pursued by multiple labels, Hill signed with Columbia Records.
By March 2019, Billboard controversially removed “Old Town Road” from the Hot Country Songs chart, stating that it didn’t incorporate enough elements of country music for it to be placed on that specific chart. In response, country music star Billy Ray Cyrus began to support the song and participated in one of many remixes that would be released.
Hill released a second single six months later, this time through Columbia Records called “Panini”. The song was remixed to feature rapper DaBaby and was on Hill’s first EP, titled 7. The EP also featured the song “Rodeo” with Cardi B. His first international performance was on June 30, 2019, at the Glastonbury Festival.
In late 2020, Hill released the single “Holiday” which debuted at 37 on the Billboard Hot 100. The following January he released a children’s book, C Is for Country. He teased the release of his single “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” for six months before its debut in March of 2021. It shot straight to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Shortly after, he released the single “Sun Goes Down” on May 21, 2021.
The release of his first studio album, Montero, was accompanied by the release of his fourth single from the album “That’s What I Want” in September of 2021. Hill has announced an upcoming tour, Long Live Montero Tour, and an upcoming album Late to da Party with a lead single of the same title.
Hill established his business entity, Nasarati LLC. In 2021, the entity filed a trademark application for “NAH HE TWEAKIN” for use with posters, stickers, shopping bags, backpacks, wallets, and clothing items like t-shirts, ski masks, and footwear, among others.
In 2022, Nasarati LLC applied for a federal trademark registration for “LIL NAS X” for musical recordings including pre-recorded albums, for clothes including tops, sweatshirts, and pants, and entertainment services including musical performances.
