J Balvin is a Colombian-born, award-winning singer and songwriter. He has won four Latin American Music Awards and five Billboard Latin Music Awards for his music. He has sold more than 35 million records, making him one of the best-selling Latin artists in history. He has also collaborated with many other famous artists, both English and Spanish-speaking, including Beyoncé, Pitbull, Cardi B, and a Super Bowl 2020 halftime show performance with Jennifer Lopez.
José Álvaro Osorio Balvín chose the name J Balvin “El Negocio” to perform under, when he was 19 years old and first starting his musical career. The name means “The Business” in English. In 2009, he signed his first record deal with EMI Colombia. His first single, released through Columbia, was “Ella Me Cautivó,” which rose to 35 on the Billboard Tropical Songs chart. They also reissued a release of his mixtape Real.
His first mainstream success was with his 2013 album, La Familia, which stayed on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart for more than 120 weeks and topped out at number ten. The lead single from the album was “6 AM.” The single featured Farruko and reached number one on the Billboard Latin Airplay chart. The second single “Ay Vamos,” received a Latin Grammy Award. The official music video for this song has over a billion views worldwide and the song reached the top of the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart. With this newfound popularity, he was featured on the albums of many other artists, including Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Robin Thicke, Maroon 5, and Prince Royce. In 2015, he was nominated for 13 Billboard Latin Music Awards. In 2016, his single “Ginza” set records for views on YouTube as well as the longest time at number one on the Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart.
Energia was released in 2016 and was his third studio album. It debuted at number one on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart. The album produced three hit singles, “Sigo Extranandote,” “Bobo” and “Safari” and featured artists such as Pharrell, Daddy Yankee, Yandel, and Juanes. He supported the album with the Energia Tour, which was sponsored by Buchanan’s Whisky in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month.
2017 saw the release of his hit single “Mi Gente” which was number one on Spotify and reached more than a billion views on YouTube. The song was eventually remixed to feature Beyoncé. This version reached number three in the U.S., giving him his first top ten hit in the United States. In 2018, Balvin was featured on “I Like It” along with Bad Bunny, by Cardi B, which would become his first number one hit in the U.S. Vibras (2018) was his next studio album and it was number one on the Top Latin Albums chart. Top singles from the album included “Mi Gente,” “Machika,” “Ahora,” “Ambiente,” and “No Es Justo.”
Oasis (2019), a collaboration with Bad Bunny, was a surprise release, dropped in the middle of the night. It went all the way to number nine on the Billboard 200. It also reached number one on the Billboard U.S. Latin Albums chart and was nominated for a Grammy Award. Top singles from the album include “Qué Pretendes,” “La Canción,” and “Yo Le Llego.” He also co-headlined shows to benefit the victims of mass shootings in Ohio and Texas. He won a Latin Grammy Award in 2019 for “Con altura” with Rosalía and performed at the Super Bowl with Jennifer Lopez. His album Colores was released in 2020. “Blanco,” “Morado,” and “Rojo” were the top singles from the album.
J Balvin has obtained a federal trademark registration for his name, to be used with musical recordings. This is for items, such as downloadable music and music on CDs and DVDs, as well as musical performances and the audio and video recordings of them.
The federal trademark registration, obtained by J Balvin, for his name also covers use on clothing items such as shirts, belts, pants, underwear, and socks, among many other items. Clothing items featuring “J Balvin” can currently be purchased on his website.
The federal trademark registration, obtained by J Balvin, for his name also applies to personal appearances and live musical performances, music on a website that is not downloadable, music composition services, and music production services.
In August of 2021, J Balvin applied for a trademark for “MADE IN MEDELLIN” in a stylized font. This covers use on goods and merchandise such as cups, mugs, beverage glasses, and empty water bottles. It also covers use on clothing like t-shirts, hats, socks, and beanies. Some of these items can currently be purchased on his website.
