Christina Aguilera is an award-winning singer and actress known for her outstanding vocal range.
Christina María Aguilera was born in New York, New York on December 18, 1980. Her father was Fausto Xavier Aguilera, a member of the United States Army. Her mother was a teacher and musician named Shelly Loraine Fidler Kearns. Her father’s military service meant her family moved a lot when she was a child until eventually, she went to live with her maternal grandmother near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Aguilera wanted to be a singer from a very early age and began entering talent shows as an adolescent. She performed on Star Search when she was ten years old, but she did not win the show. She was chosen to sing the national anthem before professional sporting events in the Pittsburgh area, including the 1992 Stanley Cup Finals. She was bullied in school and even left North Allegheny Intermediate High School to be homeschooled because of the problem.
From 1993 to 1994, Aguilera appeared on the Disney Channel’s The Mickey Mouse Club. She recorded “All I Wanna Do” with Keizo Nakanishi before recording “Reflection” for the film Mulan in 1998. The song rose to number 15 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. She was then signed by RCA (Radio Corporation of America). They released her first single “Genie in a Bottle” in June of 1999. The song peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. It also charted in more than a dozen other countries and sold 17 million copies over ten years. The eight-time platinum album Christina Aguilera contains the singles “Genie in a Bottle,” “What a Girl Wants,” “I Turn to You,” and “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You).” Each single was a number one hit, except “Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)” which reached number three on the charts. In 2000, she was awarded a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
In September 2000, Aguilera released a Spanish-language album called Mi Reflejo. The album went to number one on the Latin charts and won a Latin Grammy Award. In October of that year, she released a Christmas album called My Kind of Christmas which went platinum. She also launched her first tour, Christina Aguilera in Concert, which was a world tour with stops in Europe and Japan between 2000 and 2001. She won the Billboard Music Award for Top Female Pop Act of the Year.
In 2002, she won a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for “Lady Marmalade”, which was recorded with Pink, Mýa, and Lil’ Kim and was featured in the Moulin Rouge! movie soundtrack.
Aguilera also released her fourth studio album Stripped in 2002. It went to number two on the charts and sold over ten million copies. The lead single “Dirrty” was released in September 2002. It was followed by “Beautiful,” “Fighter,” “Can’t Hold Us Down,” and “The Voice Within.” She toured twice in 2003 in support of the album. She was featured by various other top artists on their songs, including “Car Wash” with Missy Elliott, “A Song for You” with Herbie Hancock, and Nelly’s “Til Ya Head Back.”
Her next album was released in 2006 and was titled Back to Basics. The lead single “Ain’t No Other Man” was released a month before the album. Other singles from the album included “Hurt,” “Candyman,” “Slow Down Baby,” and “Oh Mother.” The Back to Basics Tour was a world tour that ran from 2006 until 2008. Her greatest hits album was released in 2008 called Keeps Gettin’ Better: A Decade of Hits.
Aguilera released her sixth studio album, Bionic, in 2010. The lead single was “Not Myself Tonight.” It was followed by “Woohoo,” “You Lost Me,” and “I Hate Boys.” In 2010, Aguilera co-starred in Burlesque with Cher. The movie was nominated for a Golden Globe but did not win. She was asked to sing the national anthem at Super Bowl XLV. Aguilera was also a coach on the television show The Voice in 2011 and 2012 and has been a part of several other seasons of the show since then.
She released her seventh studio album, Lotus, in 2012. “Your Body” was the lead single off the album and it was followed by the single “Just a Fool.”
