Childish Gambino is the name used by Donald Glover when he performs as a rapper. He is not only an award-winning recording artist but an accomplished actor, comedian, director, screenwriter, and producer.

Donald McKinley Glover Jr. was born at Andrews Air Force Base in California on September 25, 1983. He was raised in Atlanta, Georgia by his father, a postal worker, and his mother, a daycare provider. He has two siblings – a brother and a sister. His brother now works with him as a writer on many of his projects.

Glover attended Avondale High School before transferring to DeKalb School of the Arts, a school dedicated to the performing arts. He received a degree in Dramatic Writing from the New York University Tisch School of the Arts. During his college years, he worked as a DJ and produced two albums of electronic music, as well as an unreleased mixtape.

In 2006, Glover was hired as a writer for 30 Rock on NBC. The writing team won a Writers Guild of America Award for comedy and he stayed with the show until 2009. During this time, he helped to write Mystery Team, a movie that showed at the Sundance Film Festival, as well as appeared in Community, a sitcom on NBC. It was around this time that he started to more adamantly pursue a career in rap, under the pseudonym Childish Gambino, which he had come up with using an online name generator. His first mixtape, Sick Boi, came out in 2008, with the second, Poindexter in 2009. He released two more mixtapes, I Am Just a Rapper 1 and 2, in 2010. He also appeared in advertising for GAP during the 2010 holiday season.

Glover released “Freaks and Geeks” in 2011 as the lead single from his first album titled EP. He headlined a one-man show of comedy, rap, and skits, and debuted an hour-long special on Comedy Central named Weirdo. He signed with Glassnote Records and released his first studio album, Camp. Two singles, “Heartbeat” and “Bonfire,” both made their way up the charts. The album was considered a commercial and critical success. While continuing to pursue his music career, including releasing a sixth mixtape, he acted in the romantic comedy The To Do List and guest starred in episodes of Girls

Because the Internet debuted in the top ten of the Billboard 200 in 2013. This album, his second with a studio, produced the lead single “3005.” The hit did not break into the top 50 of the Billboard Hot 100, but it rose on the UK R&B Chart. The album also produced the singles “Sweatpants” and “Crawl.” In 2014, Glover released both a mixtape and an album, STN MTN and Kauai, respectively. He was nominated for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance at the Grammys that year.

Over the next couple of years, Glover would make several appearances in movies and find major success on television. He appeared in The Lazarus EffectMagic Mike XXL, and The Martian. He is an actor, writer, director, and executive producer of the FX hit Atlanta and has won various awards for the show, including Golden Globes for Best Television Series, Best Actor, and Primetime Emmys for Best Lead Actor and Best Directing in a Comedy. Because of the show’s success, Fox signed Glover to an exclusive contract.

Glover recorded a live album during a three-show special event, which debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 in 2016 and went on to be certified as platinum. The shows were called the “Pharos Experience.” During these shows, he performed songs from his upcoming third studio album, titled Awaken, My Love! which had a different flavor than the albums Glover previously released. The album was, nonetheless, well received and would be nominated for several Grammy awards. Singles from the album include “Terrified,” “Me and Your Mama,” and “Redbone.”

His first number one single, “This Is America,” would debut at number one. In 2018, Glover played Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and he also released another EP, Summer Pack. He headlined the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in 2019 and voiced a character for The Lion King. In 2020, he released his fourth album, 3.15.20. In 2021, Glover signed a deal with Amazon and began working on a new project with Disney+.

In 2013, Donald Glover II obtained a federal trademark registration for his stage name, “CHILDISH GAMBINO,” for audio and visual recordings of musical performances, for calendars, posters, and magazines, for t-shirts, caps, sweatshirts, and other clothing items and for entertainment services centered around live musical performances.

In 2017, he obtained a federal trademark registration for “PHAROS” and a logo that is an image shaped like a pyramid for entertainment services including medical performances and live concerts.
