When the New York Mets joined the National League in 1962, they started with a record-breaking season: 40-120 – the record for the most losses. Since then, the Mets have had their share of tough times, but have recently rewarded their longtime fans with a competitive team in an extremely difficult National League East division. Through it all, their New York fans, which include celebrities such as Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Jon Stewart, have stuck with the team and the Mets brand.
The Mets is short for “Metropolitans” and the team is one of two professional baseball teams in New York City.
They are known for their distinctive orange and blue colors, which were reportedly taken from the New York Giants (orange) who moved to San Francisco to become the San Francisco Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers (blue) who moved to Los Angeles to become to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Recently, NFL star Tom Brady got into a trademark snafu by attempting to register the name TOM TERRIFIC with the US Patent and Trademark Office. In an initial refusal, the USPTO informed Mr. Brady that the nickname is widely known for only one individual, all-star Tom Seaver, who was drafted to the Mets and debuted in 1967.
In addition to the New York Mets name, the team has protected many of its nicknames and chants, including its nickname “Amazin’ Mets” (coined by manager Casey Stengel) through several filings. The team has also filed to protect the letters LGM, which mean “let’s go Mets!”
Whether the Mets will remain the ultimate underdog story or whether they will rise to the competition in the extremely tough National League East, it is clear that New York Mets fans are diehard and, as a result, the Mets brand remains extremely valuable (and, as shown by their trademark filings, well protected!)
