Tyler Perry (born Emmit Perry Jr. on September 13, 1969, in New Orleans, Louisiana), is an actor, screenwriter, producer, and director. Perry has created an entertainment empire comprising of successful plays, films and best-selling books. With this fame, his brand heavily protected with trademarks filings. He had four siblings and was born to Willie Maxine (Campbell) and Emmitt Perry, Sr. Perry’s father was a carpenter, and they had a very strained relationship. This led to Perry suffering from depression during his teenage life. He later changed his first name to ‘Tyler’ in order to separate himself from his father.
In 1991, Perry was working on an office job when he got inspired by an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show (1986) discussing the therapeutic nature of writing. He started writing letters to himself and later adapted them into a play (I Know I’ve Been Changed). This play portrayed critical subjects such as child abuse and forgiveness. Perry’s work reflected his deep connected with the Christian faith. He later created a show that he produced, starred, and directed at an Atlanta theater in 1992. Only a few people were interested. He was disappointed yet he was determined to achieve his goals. He started reworking the show, but continued doing odd jobs to make a living.
In 1998, Perry made another effort to grab the attention of theatre audience by producing ‘I Know I’ve Changed’ again. He rented out the House of Blues in Atlanta for this purpose. After all the hard work and effort, this time Perry finally performed to sellout crowds and gained commercial success. His next project was an adaptation of evangelist T. D. Jakes’ book Woman, Thou Art Loosed. This proved to be quite popular. His most famous character (Madea) came into life in his next effort. The character was a sharp-tongue grandma, which Perry played himself. The character was based on his mother and several other strong women in his life. The name of the show was “I Can Do Bad All by Myself”. This character gained a lot of popularity making it to the next show ‘Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2001)’. He developed several other plays including ‘Madea’s Family Reunion (2002)’ and ‘Madea’s Class Reunion (2003)’.
Around 35,000 people used to watch his show every week in 2005. In the same year, Perry proved himself to be a box office powerhouse and released his debut film ‘Diary of a Mad Black Woman’. In this film, Perry portrayed three different roles, including the legendary Madea. The film was a huge success and grossed more than $50 million. The success of this film proved that there was a market for African American comedies in Hollywood. One after another, Perry’s shows continued to gain success on the big screen. He directed and produced another film in the year 2006 ‘Madea’s Family Reunion’ in which he took the leading role. This film brought more than $63 million at the box office. He established his own studio the same year in Atlanta and launched his first television series on the TBS network with the name ‘House of Payne’.
Perry continued to direct and produce films that were on topics related to morals and family. He released his next big film in 2008 ‘The Family That Preys’. In 2009 he directed an Oscar nominated film with Lee Daniels and Winfrey. He continued to make successful movies in the Madea franchise, including Madea’s Witness Protection (2012), Madea’s Big Happy Family (2011) and A Madea Christmas (2014). In the year 2019, Perry announced grand opening of the $250 million Tyler Perry Studios on the site of a former 330-acre Confederate military base in Atlanta. He currently owns trademarks for the studio’s logos. This studio had already been in use when it was under construction for series like ‘Walking Dead’ and features like ‘Black Panther’.
Tyler Perry has trademark filings for ‘ALL THE QUEEN’S MEN’, ‘THE OVAL’, ‘SISTAS’, ‘MADEA’, and ‘TT’ in the entertainment category. He has also filed documents for trademarks with the name ‘TYLER PERRY FOUNDATION’ which includes charitable foundation services, namely, providing fundraising activities, supplemental funding, capital improvement funding, scholarships. He also owns trademarks for several other names in association with entertainment services. His net worth is $800 million.
