Yoenis Céspedes is a professional baseball player who plays outfielder for the Oakland Athletics in Major League Baseball. He is nicknamed “La Potencia” which translates to “The Power” for his powerful batting style.
Yoenis Céspedes was born in Campechuela, Cuba on October 18, 1985. His mother played softball at an Olympic level and his father played baseball professionally. He played in the Cuban Winter League until he was able to defect in 2011. During this time, he also played for the Cuban National Team in the 2007 Pan-American Games.
Céspedes also played in the 2009 World Baseball Classic for the Cuban National Team as the starting center fielder. As part of the Cuban National Team, he won silver at the 2009 Baseball World Cup and gold at the 2010 Intercontinental Cup, 2007 Pan American Games, and the 2010 World University Baseball Championship held in Tokyo, Japan.
When he left Cuba, he went to the Dominican Republic. He bypassed the MLB Draft and was considered a free agent. His agent Edgar Mercedes negotiated a four-year, $36 million contract for him with the Oakland Athletics.
Céspedes was hit by a pitch in his major league debut and ended up going one for three only to hit his first professional home run the very next day. As an MLB rookie, he helped his team to win the American League West.
During his second season, Céspedes won the 2013 Home Run Derby, which is part of the All-Star festivities. He was the first player ever to be the winner of the Home Run Derby but was not playing in the All-Star Game. Although he had to play through several injuries that season, he still hit .240 for the year and had 26 home runs along with 80 RBIs. In 2014, Céspedes won the Home Run Derby again, but this time he was invited to play in the All-Sar Game as well.
He was traded to the Boston Red Sox on July 31, 2014. He recorded 22 home runs with 100 RBIs while batting .260 in his only season playing for the Red Sox.
Céspedes was next traded to the Detroit Tigers in December of 2014. He was not able to defend his title and compete in the Home Run Derby that season. However, he won the Rawlings Gold Glove Award for the American League. He is one of only two players to ever win this award after a midseason trade.
In July 2015, he was traded to the New York Mets. He hit three home runs in a single game for the first time in his professional career while he was playing for them. He helped the team to the World Series, where they lost to the Royals. Although he became a free agent at the end of the season, he signed a new deal with the Mets for three years for $75 million. That year, he was named to the All-Star roster but was unable to play.
Céspedes opted out of his three-year deal with the Mets to sign a new deal with them, for four years worth $110 million. He had his second three homerun game for them that season, which would end early due to an injured hamstring. In 2018, more injuries shortened his season, and then in 2019, a fractured right ankle caused him to need surgery, effectively ending his season. He opted out of the 2020 season because of concerns about COVID-19. He is represented by Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports.
La Potencia, LLC is a company founded by Yoenis Céspedes to oversee his business interests. Through this company, Céspedes would buy the bankrupt bat company, Chandler Bats. Chandler, known for its high-quality bats began production in 2007 but filed bankruptcy in 2019. Chandler Bats are known for the cracking sound made when they make contact with a ball.
In 2022, La Potencia, LLC filed a trademark application for “CHANDLER,” “CHANDLER BATS,” “DIFFERENT BY DESIGN,” and the company logo which is a letter “C” with the word “Champion” for backpacks, for various clothing items, for baseball and softball bats, gloves, and other accessories and for retail store services that feature baseball and related items.
In 2014, RxSport, Corp. obtained a federal trademark registration for “CHANDLER BATS” and a very similar logo for baseball bats. These trademarks are being disputed by La Potencia, LLC.
In 2018, La Potencia, LLC filed a trademark application for “YC 52” and a logo featuring these numbers and letters for a variety of clothing and for baseball bats and items related to the sport of baseball.
