Serena Williams is a legendary women’s singles and doubles tennis player. She has won a slew of championship titles as well as Olympic gold medals.
Serena Jameka Williams was born in Saginaw Michigan on September 26, 1981. Serena Williams along with her older sister Venus Williams was coached by her parents with very little outside influence. Williams went professional in 1995 but did not win her first major title until four years later at the U.S. Open. During 2002 and 2003, she won four major singles titles and dominantly faced her sister Venus in the finals every single time. In this time, she accomplished a non-calendar year Grand Slam and a Career Grand Slam, which is often referred to as the “Serena Slam.”
Although she would still win a major title during each of the next two years, this was considered a period of decline because she had been so dominant from the beginning of her career. She also faced multiple injuries during this time.
Williams battled back, first breaking the number one world ranking record, which she had already owned. Then in 2012, she won Wimbledon and returned to the Olympic Games to take gold there completing the elusive Career Golden Slam. Between 2014 and 2015 she won more than half of all of the singles major titles, providing her a full second career Grand Slam. Her 23rd major singles title came at the 2017 Australian Open, breaking the record set by legend Steffi Graf. After this accomplishment, she decided to take time off from tennis to start a family. She has since returned to playing tennis and has advanced to four major championships. She won her first title since giving birth at the 2020 ASB Classic.
Serena Williams is considered by many experts and analysts to be the greatest female tennis player of all time. She is considered a cultural icon and is known for ushering in a new era of tennis known for a more powerful and athletic style of play for women. She also inspired countless children of color to play the sport of tennis.
In 2017, Williams married Alexis Ohanian in New Orleans. The pair have a daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr, often called just Olympia. Williams resides with her family in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Williams has many business and property investments as well as partnerships and sponsorship deals. She also has interests in fashion, entertainment, and other sports including football and soccer. She is a minority owner of the Miami Dolphins franchise and part of a female investment group that has an ownership stake in a new franchise in the National Women’s Soccer League. It is believed that Serena Williams’ net worth is around $210 million.
