Rob Gronkowski, affectionately known as “Gronk,” is an American football player in the NFL. He plays tight end and is effective both as a blocker and pass catcher. He is a four-time Super Bowl champion, a four-time All-Pro, and a five-time Pro Bowler. He is considered, by many, to be one of the greatest tight ends of all time.

Robert James Gronkowski was born in Amherst, New York on May 14, 1989. He was raised in Williamsville, as the youngest of five brothers. His father, who owned a fitness equipment business, was a former collegiate football player. Gronkowski is also the great-grandson of cycling Olympian, Ignatius Gronkowski. All of his brothers have also played collegiate and professional sports.

A hockey player until the age of 14, Gronkowski switched to basketball because of his towering height and played center. He attended Williamsville North High School, where he also played football, as a tight end, a defensive end, and was a kick-off return specialist. During his high school years, he also played baseball at first base.

While playing football as a junior in high school, he recorded 648 yards and seven offensive touchdowns, as well as 73 tackles and six sacks. He was a member of the National Honor Society academically and athletically was awarded All-Western New York first-team and All-State second-team honors.

Before his senior year, Gronkowski moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he attended Woodland Hills High School. He was initially ruled ineligible to play football, but that decision was eventually reconsidered and he was allowed to play. As a senior at Woodland Hills High School, Gronkowski recorded 152 yards and four touchdowns, for the games that he was allowed to play in. He was named a consensus All-American and was a highly sought-after five-star recruit. He was actively recruited by Clemson, Maryland, Syracuse, Ohio State, and Kentucky, among many others. He chose to attend the University of Arizona.

As a freshman at the University of Arizona, Gronkowski played in 12 games. He recorded 28 receptions for 525 yards and six touchdowns. During his sophomore year, he played in 10 games, where he recorded 47 receptions, for 672 yards and 10 touchdowns. He sustained an injury to his back and was unable to play in the following season, his junior year. He did not return to college football but instead declared for the 2010 NFL Draft.

Gronkowski was invited to the 2010 NFL Scouting combine. He chose to attend the combine but did not participate in any of the athletic drills. Between his injury and subsequent year away from the sport, as well as his inability to perform at the NFL Combine, Gronkowski saw his draft stock dramatically decrease. However, he was taken by the New England Patriots in the second round of the draft.

During his rookie season in a game against the Steelers, Gronkowski recorded three touchdowns. He was both the first Patriots rookie and the youngest rookie in the history of the NFL, to score three touchdowns in one game. His first 100-yard game as a professional was against the Miami Dolphins that season. He was named Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week twice during the regular season and nominated a total of three times. He was also named to the NFL All-Rookie Team.

2011 would prove to be a breakout season for Gronkowski, who saw 90 receptions for a total of 1,327 yards and 18 touchdowns. He helped his team to Super Bowl XLVI, where they lost to the New York Giants. He was voted to the 2012 Pro Bowl and was named an All-Pro for the first time in his career. Gronkowski was ranked as the 21st player on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2012 list as voted by other NFL players.

Gronkowski played for the New England Patriots for nine years, from 2010 until 2019. During his time with the Patriots, he won three Super Bowl rings, was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year (2014), was named to First-team All-Pro four times, was voted to the Pro Bowl five times, and led the NFL in receiving touchdowns (2011).

After an initial retirement, Gronkowski decided to return to the sport to play in the 2020 season and was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he would, once again, play alongside former, longtime Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady. The pair would win a fourth Super Bowl together, this time in Tampa Bay in 2020.

During his career in the NFL, Gronkowski has set records for being the tight end with the most receiving touchdowns in a season, most career touchdowns in the postseason, most total touchdowns in a season, and the most 100-yard games.

In 2021, Rob Gronkowski, under his business Gronk Nation, LLC., obtained a federal trademark registration for a logo that is a silhouette of Gronkowski spiking a ball (something that he is known for doing after touchdowns) for use with clothing such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, and jackets.

Gronkowski also obtained a federal trademark registration for a logo that is a silhouette of a football player spiking a ball along, with the words “GRONK FITNESS” for similar purposes.
