Renee Montgomery is a former professional basketball player in the Women’s National Basketball Association, who won two championships, is a sports broadcaster and part owner of the Atlanta Dream.
Renee Montgomery was born in St Albans, West Virginia on December 2, 1986. She played high school basketball at South Charleston High School in Charleston, West Virginia alongside fellow future WNBA player, Alexis Hornbuckle. As a team captain, she led South Charleston High School team to the West Virginia State Championships three times. As a senior, she averaged 22.5 points, six assists, five rebounds and five steals per game. Montgomery was named a McDonald’s All American, 2005 Gatorade West Virginia High School Player of the Year, and Associated Press West Virginia Player of the Year.
She decided to play college basketball at the University of Connecticut, where she made her collegiate debut against Marist and recorded three assists in 19 minutes. Montgomery went on to recorded 14 points in 35 minutes against Villanova in December and then 13 points with three 3-point field goals in the NCAA Regional Semifinal. She averaged 8.9 points, 3.3 assists and 1.7 steals and was named 2006 Big East Freshman of the Year.
As a sophomore, Montgomery led UConn’s team with 163 assists and scored double digits in 29 games, with an average of 13.3 points recorded per game. She was named first team All-Conference and Kodak/WBCA All-District I Team. That summer she played on the national team, representing the U.S. and helped the team to a gold medal at the FIBA U-20 Championship.
She started and played in all 38 games during her junior year and averaged 14.1 points, with 2. 8 rebounds per game. She was honored as 2008 State Farm First Team All-America, 2008 Greensboro All-Region squad, First Team All-Conference, and 2008 Associated Press Third Team All-America. As a senior, Montgomery recorded 16.5 points per game, a total of 97 rebounds and 199 assists, while starting in all 39 games that she played in. She was considered one of the best guards in the country during her senior year in college. She helped the team to both a perfect record and a National Championship.
In 2009, Montgomery was drafted by the Minnesota Lynx. She started 9 of the 34 games that she played for them and averaged nine points per game with two rebounds and two assists per game. She was traded to the Connecticut Sun for the following season. She started in 23 of the 34 games that she played in for them that season. She averaged 13.3 points, with 2.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.
Montgomery started all 34 games scoring 14.6 points per game with 2.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists in her 2011 season. In 2012, she played in 34 games, but didn’t start any of them. She still averaged 11.6 points per game and was named WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year. She started 18 of 23 games in 2013 maintaining an average of 10 points per game and went back to coming off the bench the following year. During that 2014 season, she averaged only 6.7 points per game.
She was traded to the Seattle Storm the following season, where she played 17 games before she was traded to the Minnesota Lynx for a second stint with them, playing 17 games in that season there as well. Montgomery played in 34 games for Lynx in 2016 and 2017 averaging 7.75 points per game over the course of the two seasons.
Montgomery was traded to the Atlanta Dream, where she started and played in 34 games a season in 2018 and 2019. She averaged more than 9 points per game over those two seasons.
In 2021, Montgomery was part of the investor group that purchased the Atlanta Dream. She is also a part owner of a team in the Fan Controlled Football League.
Montgomery created an LLC named after herself. This company, Renee Montgomery LLC filed a trademark application for “MOMENTS EQUAL MOMENTUM,” “REMOTELY RENEE,” “RENEE MONTGOMERY,” and “RENEES RUNS” for t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and other clothing items. These items can be found for sale to support her charitable foundation on her website.
Renee Montgomery LLC also filed an application to register “REMOTELY RENEE” as a trademark for use with podcasts, both downloadable and not. Her podcasts, which are available on Sounder, are sports and entertainment themed and also touch on current events.
Montgomery’s company also filed a federal trademark application for “RENEE MONTGOMERY” for providing a website for sports and entertainment.
Additional trademark applications include “THINK TANK PRODUCTIONS” for entertainment services in the nature of providing shows and programming and “WATCH YA HEAD” for entertainment in the nature of a live announcer and making pre-recorded announcements.
