Oscar Robertson is a retired professional basketball player who played for 14 seasons and was a 12-time NBA All-Star.
Born in poverty in Tennessee in the late 1930s, Oscar Palmer Robertson moved to Indianapolis with his family before he was two years old. He was raised in a segregated housing project where he learned to play basketball, which he considered “a poor kids’ game.” He practiced using makeshift balls and makeshift baskets to hone his skills.
Robertson played basketball at Crispus Attucks High School where he was part of the first team from an all-black school to win a state championship in the United States. They also won a second championship the following year. During Robertson’s final year of high school, the team did not return to the state championship. However, he averaged 24 points per game and was awarded the title of Indiana Mr. Basketball.
He chose to attend the University of Cincinnati where he continued to play basketball. Robertson played there for three years and averaged more than 33 points per game. Every year that he played college basketball, he was named national player of the year, held the national scoring title, and was named an All-American. He also set 19 additional school records and 14 NCAA records. Robertson also won the NCAA Men’s Player of the Year award twice. That award would later be renamed The Oscar Robertson Trophy in recognition of his successful and well-decorated collegiate career. In 2012, Roberston obtained a federal trademark registration for “OSCAR ROBERTSON TROPHY” for providing awards.
Robertson also played for Team USA at the 1960 Olympic Games. He helped the team to win every one of their games by a margin of more than 42 points. He won a gold medal in Rome as well as when representing the United States at the Pan American Games held in Chicago.
After being drafted by the Cincinnati Royals, Robertson averaged more than 30 points per game in his rookie season and recorded his first professional triple-double in November. His rookie season average was almost a triple-double. Along with earning the NBA Rookie of the Year award, he was also named to the All-NBA First Team. He was also selected for the NBA All-Star Game where he was awarded the NBA All-Star Game MVP.
In the next season, Robertson went on to become the first player in the history of the NBA to record a triple-double as a season average. Additionally, he would be named All-NBA First Team and selected for the NBA All-Star game. Throughout Robertson’s career, he was selected as an NBA All-Star for 12 consecutive years and he was named MVP of the game on three separate occasions. He was also named to the All-NBA First Team for nine consecutive seasons and the All-NBA Second Team for two years following that run.
Robertson was the NBA assists leader on six different occasions and was named the league MVP in 1964. He played for the Cincinnati Royals until 1970 when he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks before the 1970-1971 season. In 1971, he would win an NBA Championship. He retired after the 1974 season, where he helped to lead the Milwaukee Bucks all the way to the NBA Finals.
After he retired, the University of Cincinnati erected a statue of Robertson. Additionally, the Cincinnati Royals, which would become the Kansas City Kings before becoming the Sacramento Kings, have honored him by naming an annual award after him. Each season a Kings player is honored with the award for outstanding play, leadership, and commitment to the community, known as the Oscar Robertson Triple-Double Award. In 2018, Robertson applied for a federal trademark registration of “OSCAR ROBERTSON TRIPLE-DOUBLE AWARD” for awarding excellence in basketball.
After his NBA career, Robertson did some color commentary and endorsed various products and services. In 2015 he obtained a federal trademark registration for his name “OSCAR ROBERTSON,” as well as his nickname “THE BIG O,” for endorsement services and entertainment services.
In 2008, Oscar Robertson founded Oscar Robertson Document Management Services, LLC, also known as Oscar Robertson Solutions. They are primarily a document storage and photocopy company. The company is located in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 2018, Robertson obtained a federal trademark registration for the company logo, which shows a basketball player and the words “ORS OSCAR ROBERTSON SOLUTIONS” for business services including document management and storage and the implementation of information technology systems. He also obtained a federal trademark registration for “OSCAR ROBERTSON SOLUTIONS” for similar purposes.
