Markelle Fultz is a professional basketball player in the NBA. He plays point guard for the Orlando Magic.
Markelle N’Gai Fultz was born on May 29, 1998, in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He was raised by his mother and is the youngest of two siblings. He attended DeMatha Catholic High school, which is a private boys’ school known for being a basketball powerhouse. Fultz struggled to find his place in the school’s basketball program as he was eventually cut from the school’s varsity team but could outplay everyone on the junior varsity team.
In his junior year of high school, Fultz was 6’3”, which helped him to get back on the varsity team for his school. He recorded 16.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game in his that year and was named the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Before even starting his senior year of high school, Fultz committed to the University of Washington to play basketball. He would go on to break several school records his senior year of high school and helped his team to a second consecutive conference championship.
Fultz was asked to play in the McDonald’s All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic in his senior year of high school. He performed well in both games and was then invited to play in the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship for Team USA. He was the team’s top-scoring player and helped them to win a gold medal, as well as receiving his own tournament MVP award.
Fultz only played one year for the Washington Huskies but played extremely well while there. Unfortunately, he had expected two of the team’s better freshman players from the year before to return to the team, but they both chose to enter the NBA Draft. This turn of events made Fultz the de facto leader of the team, as well as being the team’s best player. Ultimately, this dashed any hopes that Fultz had of winning a national championship in college, which led him to forego his remaining collegiate eligibility and enter the NBA Draft himself after just one year. During his year at the University of Washington, Fultz recorded an average of 23 points, and almost six rebounds and six assists per game.
He was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2017 NBA Draft, where he was signed to a four-year rookie contract. Fultz played for 18 minutes in his NBA debut and recorded 10 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 assist. He struggled with a shoulder injury throughout the season and ended up playing in only 16 games for the 76ers that season. He averaged seven points, three rebounds, and three assists per game. In his second year with the 76ers, Fultz started in 15 of the 19 games that he played and averaged eight points, three rebounds, and three assists per game. He was then diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) which made it virtually impossible for him to shoot a basketball.
Fultz was traded to the Orlando Magic and recorded 12 points, six assists, and two steals in his debut game with the team. During his first season with the Magic, he averaged 12 points per game with five assists, three rebounds, and one steal per game. He started in 60 of the 72 games that he played in for them that season.
In the following season, he started in all eight games that he played before he tore his ACL, which ended his season. In those eight games, he averaged almost 13 points per game with five assists, three rebounds, and one steal per game. Fultz is still an active player for the Orlando Magic.
In 2019, Markelle Fultz obtained a federal trademark registration for his name “MARKELLE FULTZ” for clothing such as jackets, pants, shirts, shoes, and more. In 2019, he obtained a federal trademark registration for a logo based on the letter “F” and another registration for “F2G” to be used for the same purposes.
Additionally, he obtained a federal trademark registration for the phrase, “FAITHFUL 2 THE GRIND” for use with clothing, as well as federal registrations for “#F2G” and “TEAM FULTZ” for the same purposes.
In 2020, Fultz obtained a federal trademark registration for “FAITHFUL 2 THE GRIND” and “#F2G” for sports camps, most likely to be used with his summer youth basketball camps that are run through the NBA.
