Manny Ramirez is a legendary professional baseball player from the Dominican Republic. He played for 19 seasons and recorded a plethora of achievements and awards.

Manuel Arístides Ramírez Onelcida moved, with his parents, from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic to New York, New York when he was only 13 years old. While living in New York City, he was able to play baseball at the same park Lou Gehrig did. He loved baseball as a child and looked up to Tony Fernández and George Bell. Ramirez played baseball in high school at George Washington High School. Although he was very humble about his baseball acumen, he was named All-City three times and New York City Public School Player of the Year. He left high school in 1991 and was drafted by the Cleveland Guardians (then known as the Cleveland Indians).

Initially, Ramirez played for the Burlington Indians, where he led the league in slugging and total bases. He was honored as short-season Player of the Year and Appalachian League Most Valuable Player. The following season, he was named Most Exciting Player in the Carolina League and Minor League Player of the Year, while transitioning through first Single A, then Double and Triple A before making his major league debut in September of 1993.

Ramirez, who would go on to be known as one of the best hitters of all time, went hitless during his first game but had a double and two homers in four at-bats during his second major league game for Cleveland. The 1994 season would mark his first full season in the major league, but the season would be cut short due to the 1994–95 Major League Baseball strike. In 1995, Ramirez recorded 31 home runs with a batting average of .308, while helping his team reach the World Series, where they lost to the Atlanta Braves. He won the Silver Slugger Award and was selected for his first All-Star game.

In the following two seasons, Ramirez continued to play well, helping the Cleveland team make it to the 1996 American League Division Series and the 1997 World Series, respectively, before losing out both years. He had a banner season in 1998, with him batting .294 with 45 home runs and 145 RBIs. Ramirez would also make his second appearance in the All-Star game in 1998. He made a third All-Star game appearance in 1999, as well as being the AL RBI leader, he won the AL Hank Aaron Award and won his second Silver Slugger Award. Ramirez spent much of the next season injured and only played in 118 games for Cleveland’s major league team. The team failed to make the postseason, but he was selected for another All-Star game and won the Silver Slugger Award again.

Ramirez signed a $200 million contract for 10 years with the Boston Red Sox, before the start of the next season. Although hampered by a hamstring injury for part of the season, he performed well for the Red Sox, batting .306 with 41 home runs. He scored more home runs than any player in their first year with the Red Sox ever. He would record Fenway Park’s second longest hit by a home player, as well as the longest home run hit ever recorded at Toronto’s SkyDome. Again, Ramirez was selected for the All-Star game and won the Silver Slugger Award. The next season he would battle another hamstring injury, but like clockwork, he was selected for the All-Star game and won the Silver Slugger Award, as well as being the AL batting champion. In 2003, he helped his team to the American League Championship Series, where they lost. He was again named an All-Star and awarded the Silver Slugger Award.

In 2004, en route to his first World Series win, Ramirez was first in the American League for home runs, slugging percentage, and on-base plus slugging. He and fellow Dominican-American, David Ortiz became the best pair of AL teammates in stats, since Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth, who played some 70 years before them. With the team’s win in the World Series, Ramirez was also named World Series Most Valuable Player.

Ramirez would win a second World Series with the franchise and then go on to play for the Los Angeles Dodgers (where the term Mannywood was coined), the Chicago White Sox, and the Tampa Bay Rays. In his career, he won two World Series, was named an All-Star 12 times, and won the Silver Slugger Award a total of nine times.
