LaMelo Ball is a professional basketball player, who is an All-Star player and former NBA Rookie of the Year.
LaMelo LaFrance Ball was born in Anaheim, California on August 22, 2001. He was born into a basketball family, as both of his parents played in college and his father briefly played professional football in Europe. Ball’s father, Lorenzo, was his basketball coach from an early age.
Ball began to receive attention for playing basketball while in high school at Chino Hills High School. During his freshman year, he was teammates with three family members – his two brothers and a cousin. The team had a perfect record and won a state championship. Ball recorded an average of over 16 points per game and was named MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year. In his sophomore year of high school, he averaged 26 points and nine assists per game and helped his team to a 60-win streak, before finally losing to Oak Hill Academy.
A coaching change and a dispute between his father and the school, both led to Ball being homeschooled the following year. He would spend that year playing in the Lithuanian Basketball League. He averaged 6.5 points and 2.4 assists, during his time with the team in Lithuania. Later that year, he also played for the Los Angeles Ballers of the Junior Basketball Association. The JBA was created by Lonzo Ball and was only in existence for one season. He helped to lead his team to a JBA Championship. He averaged almost 40 points and 15 rebounds per game in the league, showcasing his skills in the sport.
Ball returned to high school in the United States, to play his senior year of basketball at SPIRE Institute and Academy in Geneva, Ohio. He helped to lead that team to the state finals, but was then ruled ineligible for almost all national awards, recognitions, and all-star games, because he had played professionally in Europe.
Having already lost his eligibility to play in the NCAA, Ball played for the Illawarra Hawks in the National Basketball League in Australia. He played 12 games, averaged 17 points per game, and was named the League’s Rookie of the Year.
Ball was the third pick in the 2020 NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets. Notably, he and his brother Lonzo (who was drafted in 2017) were the first set of brothers in the NBA to be drafted in the top three. LaMelo Ball would become the youngest player to ever put up a triple-double in the NBA. He missed almost a month of the shortened season due to a fractured wrist but was still named NBA Rookie of the Year and NBA All-Rookie First Team. For the season, he recorded almost 16 points per game in the 51 games that he was able to play in.
Comparatively, Ball averaged almost 20 points per game in the first 55 games of the following season, where he was also chosen for his first All-Star appearance.
Big Baller Brand, Inc. was founded by LaMelo’s father, Lavar Ball, and manages LaMelo Ball’s interests, as well as other business and merchandising opportunities.
In 2017, Big Baller Brand, Inc. obtained a federal trademark registration for a logo containing the letters “Z” and “O” for athletic apparel. They also applied for a trademark for a logo that includes the letters and words “BBB BIG BALLER BRAND” for athletic apparel.
In 2018, the company also obtained a federal trademark registration for a logo featuring the letters “MB1” for footwear. This was used on the first pair of signature shoes for Ball, which would make him the youngest player to have a signature shoe. The shoes also denoted his choice to go professional and opt-out of NCAA play.
In 2020, the company applied for a trademark for a logo featuring the letters “G3 GELO 3” and the phrase “WE ARE THE NU BREED” also for athletic apparel.
In 2020, LaMelo Ball founded MB1 Enterprises, Inc. It applied for a trademark for a new logo featuring the letters “MB1” for clothing of various types, jewelry, and use for basketball camps and educational services. They also filed a trademark application for “LAMELO BALL,” “LAMELO,” and “MELO” for the same purposes.
