John Daly is a professional golfer, who plays on the PGA Tour. Daly is known for his all-or-nothing play style and bucking country club tradition.
John Patrick Daly was born in Carmicheal, California on April 28, 1966. When he was four years old, his family moved to Dardanelle, Arkansas. He started playing golf the next year. Growing up, his family moved around a lot and he spent time in Virginia, Louisiana, and Missouri.
In high school, Daly played both football and golf and earned a letter each year. As a punter and kicker, he helped the football team to a state championship. In golf, he won the Missouri State Amateur Championship as a junior and the Arkansas State Amateur Championship as a senior.
Daly attended the University of Arkansas on a golf scholarship. During his time there he qualified for the 1986 U.S. Open but didn’t make the 36-hole cut.
He turned professional in 1987 and his first professional victory was at the 1987 Missouri Open. He qualified for the PGA Tour for the first time in 1991, going on to win the tournament that year. Daly was awarded PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year for his performance.
He won his second major, the British Open, in 1995. Although he has won two majors, Daly has never been selected for the Ryder Cup. In 2004, he won the Buick Invitational and was honored as the PGA TOUR Comeback Player of the Year.
Although his play has been somewhat inconsistent, he has made quite a reputation with his driving distance from the tee. This is how Daly earned his nickname, “Long John.” He attributes his ability to get this distance to his “grip it and rip it” method.
Outside of golf, Daly is well known for his entrepreneurial and charitable endeavors. He also writes and records music. He has released three studio albums, My Life, I Only Know One Way, and Whiskey & Water. Daly has worked with such well-known artists as Willie Nelson, Kid Rock, Johnny Lee, and Darius Rucker. He also worked on Kid Rock’s song, “Half Your Age” which appeared on the artist’s Rock n Roll Jesus album.
Daly chooses partnerships with brands that he likes and that compliment his personal brand. He is well known for being unwilling to dress the part of the country club golfer. In 2014, he teamed up with the Loudmouth brand and started sporting their loud prints and designs on the course at tournaments.
He has his own interest in fashion as well. As early as 2000, Daly applied for a trademark for a logo with his signature and a lion swinging a club for golfing apparel and other clothing items. The trademark can also be used with golf bags, gloves, tees, and additional items. Over the years he has obtained a federal trademark registration for a lion logo, a stylized version of his signature, “JOHN DALY,” “GRIP IT & RIP IT,” and “JOHN DALY’S GRIP IT & SIP IT” for similar uses. Many of these items can be found for sale on his personal website.
Daly obtained a federal trademark registration for his name “JOHN DALY” for use with alcoholic beverages that are not beer. This registration was for his wine company, which is no longer in business. Daly is also known for having a mixed drink named after him, although none of his companies have ever sold that drink. The drink is very similar to the Arnold Palmer, only it has alcohol added to it.
Daly is still an active golfer and still plays on the PGA Tour. He often plays alongside his son, John Daly II. Daly II is attending his father’s alma mater, also on a golf scholarship. Daly has had a long and prosperous relationship with the Hooters restaurant franchise, even signing memorabilia in their parking lots during tournaments. Hooters is now working with Daly’s son Daly II on a NIL deal that has the father-son duo promoting the restaurant together.
John Daly’s charitable efforts are focused on the John Daly and Major Ed Heart of a Lion Foundation. The foundation aims to support veterans, especially those facing disabilities after service. It also focuses on wellness for children across the nation. The foundation raises money through golf outings and tournaments, including the Genesis of Norman Open at Belmar.
The John Daly and Major Ed Heart of a Lion Foundation has thrown their support behind the Boys and Girls Club of America and many veterans affairs organizations.
