Jack Flaherty is an American Major League Baseball (MLB) player who plays for the St. Louis Cardinals. He was born on October 15, 1995, in Burbank, California. Flaherty attended Harvard-Westlake School, Los Angeles at the same time as Max Fried and Lucas Giolito, who were also drafted into the MLB. His pitching coach at the time was Ethan Katz.
Flaherty played in various positions on the varsity baseball team at Harvard-Westlake for all four years of high school. Harvard-Westlake was the #1 team in the nation at the beginning of Flaherty’s senior season.
In his last two seasons of high school ball, Flaherty’s record was 23-0. After the 2014 regular session he was named as Player of the Year for the Southern Section Division I and the Los Angeles Times Player of the Year. He was able to win a lot of hearts with his tremendous performance. In 2014, he was named California’s Gatorade Player of the Year in baseball. His four-year record was 35-3.
Flaherty’s professional baseball career began in 2014 when the Cardinals choose him in the first round of the draft. On June 17, Flaherty signed with the Cardinals with $2 million bonus and began his minor league career with the Cardinals of the Gulf Coast League. Flaherty posted a 1.59 ERA in 22.2 innings pitched in his first year.
He also played for Peoria Chiefs in 2015, in which he scored 9-3 with a 2.8 ERA. Before the 2016 season, he was ranked by Baseball America as the third-best candidate in the Cardinals’ system. He spent the 2016 season with the Palm Beach Cardinals and mid-season was ranked 88th in Baseball America’s top-100 players.
Jack began the 2017 session with the Springfield Cardinals but was soon promoted to the Memphis Redbirds, where he stayed until his MLB debut on September 1, 2017. In his first game, against the San Francisco Giants, he pitched four innings, striking out six and giving up five runs. The Cardinals name Flaherty as their 2017 Minor League Pitcher of the Year at the end of the season.
In March 2018, Flaherty played on Opening Day as a replacement for the injured Cardinal’s player, Adam Wainwright, but was soon optioned back to the Memphis Redbirds. In May, he was called back to the Cardinal’s again and won his first MLB game on May 20, 2018. He finished his rookie year with an 8-9 record and 3.34 ERA in 28 starts, striking out 182 batters in 51 innings pitched.
Flaherty switched his number from 32 to 22 to accommodate new teammate, Matt Wieters in 2019. Following the 2019 All-Star break, he had a 0.91 ERA which is the third-lowest rank in major league history, behind Jake Arrieta and Bob Gibson. In August, Flaherty was named the National League Pitcher. At the end of his 2019 regular season he made history by becoming the third-youngest pitcher to strike out 230 batters and walk 55 or fewer with a 2.75 ERA or lower. He was then nominated for a Gold Glove for the first time and finished fourth in the National League Cy Young Award vote.
