Dylan Larkin is a professional hockey player in the National Hockey League. He is a center for the Detroit Red Wings.

Dylan Larkin was born in Waterford, Michigan on July 30, 1996. He first played hockey with Detroit Belle Tire, a minor league ice hockey team.

As a junior hockey player, he played for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program from 2012 to 2014. During his first season, which was 2012-2013, he recorded 13 goals and 14 assists while playing in 55 games. While skating for them, Larkin helped the team win the 2012 Four Nations Tournament. The next season, he returned to skate for USA Hockey’s U18 team. He played in 60 games, scoring 56 points. He also played in the 2013 CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game before being drafted by the Detroit Red Wings.

After high school, Larkin attended the University of Michigan. He played hockey for the Wolverines for one season and recorded an outstanding season that put him in the top ten of the nation across all hockey statistics. He was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and named to the American Hockey Coaches Association Second Team All-American, Big Ten All-Freshman Team, and All-Big Ten First Team.

In 2015, he played for Team USA at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships where he led the team in scoring. Larkin also helped the team to a bronze medal at the 2015 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship. He again represented the USA at the 2016 IIHF World Championship and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. He returned as a captain for Team USA at the 2017 IIHF World Championship and the 2018 IIHF World Championship where the team won bronze. He also played in the 2019 IIHF World Championship in Slovakia.

Larkin went professional in 2015 when he signed his rookie deal with the Detroit Red Wings. After a short but successful stint with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings’ AHL Affiliate, he made his debut for the Red Wings at just 19 years old. He recorded his first professional assist and first professional goal in his debut game. Larkin went on to have a prolific season, scoring 23 goals and 22 assists while playing in every game. He helped the team to the playoffs, was named to the All-Star Game, and played in the NHL All-Star Game SuperSkills Competition. He was named Detroit Red Wings Rookie of the Year.

His second season statistics didn’t seem as strong, as Larkin played at two positions, winger as well as center. Because of this, even though Larkin played in the same number of games as he did in his rookie season, he only recorded 17 goals and 15 assists. The 2017-2018 season saw an improvement with 15 goals and 47 assists. At the end of the season, he signed a five-year, $30.5 million contract with the Red Wings.

During the 2018-2019 hockey season, Larkin played in 76 games and had 32 goals and 41 assists. In the next season, he would record 19 goals and 34 assists in 71 games. The 2020-2021 hockey season was shortened by the coronavirus pandemic, so he only played in 44 games, but still had nine goals and 14 assists. He also had his first career hat-trick that season.

Larkin had a great season in 2021-2022 when he was also named a team captain. He played in 71 games, missing the last six games of the year but still recorded 31 goals and 38 assists. He was named to the NHL All-Star Game.

Larkin founded the Larkin Hockey School in his hometown of Waterford, Michigan with his brother Colin and cousins Woodser, Adam, and Ryan. Colin, who is also a professional hockey player, was signed to the Edmonton Oilers in 2018. Ryan was a goaltender at Miami University of Ohio and Adam briefly played for the Reading Royals and the Adirondack Thunder. The school is run from the Lakeland Ice Arena and is meant to bring their family closer as well as a way to give back to their community.

In 2018, Dylan Larkin filed a trademark application for a logo including the words “71 LARKIN HOCKEY SCHOOL” (71 is his jersey number) for providing hockey classes, camps, and seminars.

In 2020, Larkin also obtained a federal trademark registration for “D-BOSS” – his nickname – for mugs and beverage containers as well as apparel related to hockey.
