Dez Bryant was a professional football player in the National Football League for more than a decade. He played wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys for the majority of his career. He also had a significant collegiate football career while attending Oklahoma State University. Bryant is also an astute businessman and well-recognized celebrity.
Desmond Demond Bryant is from Galveston Island, Texas, and was born in 1988. He was raised in Lufkin, Texas where he attended high school. He was a standout athlete in both football and track and field. In his senior year, he had 21 touchdowns and over 1,200 yards. He was given All-State and All-American honors. Bryant was also a participant in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl. As a four-star recruit coming out of high school, he was recruited by Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State. He chose to attend Oklahoma State to play for head coach, Mike Gundy.
During his freshman year, Bryant played in 12 games and had 622 yards and six touchdowns. As a sophomore, he had an outstanding season, in which he recorded 1,480 yards and a total of 21 touchdowns, as well as being named an All-American. As a junior, he played in only three games where he put up a total of 323 yards and five touchdowns. He was then ruled ineligible by the NCAA and his collegiate football career ended.
It was during Bryant’s college football career that he first started his signature touchdown celebration of “throwing up the X” in which he raises his arms in an “X” fashion. According to Bryant, he does this to keep away negativity and prove his doubters wrong.
Bryant was not invited to the NFL Combine, however, he ran a 4.52-second 40-yard dash at Oklahoma State’s Pro Day. The Dallas Cowboys traded up to take him late in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He was given the number 88 jersey, which is very significant to the Cowboys organization. The number was previously worn by the great wide receivers, Michael Irvin and Drew Pearson. This group of wide receivers is fondly referred to as “The 88 Club.”
As a rookie, Bryant broke Irvin’s record to become the youngest Cowboy player to have three touchdowns in one game. He recorded 561 yards and six touchdowns as a receiver and three return touchdowns in only twelve games. His season ended prematurely due to an ankle injury, but he was still named to the NFL All-Rookie Team. In his second year playing for the Cowboys, he officially became the starting wideout for the team and also continued some punt return duties. He had nine touchdowns and recorded 928 yards as a receiver that season.
Although he did not catch his first touchdown until week six of the 2012 season, he amassed 12 touchdowns and 1,382 yards from 92 receptions. In 2013, Bryant started every game and recorded 1,233 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns. He was voted to his first Pro Bowl at the end of the season. In 2014, the final year of his rookie contract, Bryant broke the franchise record for touchdowns in a season with 16, while also recording 1,320 yards in 88 catches. He helped the Cowboys to the playoffs for the first time in his career. His season ended with a controversial play, which ultimately led the NFL to redefine what constituted a catch. The pass, which many believe that he caught, was deemed incomplete costing the Cowboys a shot at the Super Bowl.
In 2015, the organization placed the franchise tag on Bryant, keeping him with the team for another year. Just a few months later they negotiated a new contract worth more than $70 million over five years. That year he was only able to play in nine games and recorded just three touchdowns and 401 yards. He required foot and ankle surgery during the off-season.
Bryant continued to play for the Cowboys throughout 2016 and 2017 before being released by the team at the end of the 2017 season. He had injury-plagued stints with both the New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens between 2018 and 2020.
In 2015, Bryant obtained a federal trademark registration for “#THROWUPTHEX” a reference to his signature touchdown celebration for athletic shirts, graphic t-shirts, hoodies, and similar clothing items.
He also obtained a federal trademark registration for a logo design of the number “88” which was his jersey number, for t-shirts and other clothing items.
In 2019, he applied for a trademark for “SOCIETY X” for cosmetics and health and beauty aids such as make-up, bath salts, facial cleansers, skin lotions, and similar items, for eyewear such as sunglasses, for jewelry such as tie clips, lapel pins, and watches, for sports and athletic style bags, for clothing items including jeans, shorts, suits and coats, and for retail store services, conducting tradeshows, promoting the services of others and similar items.
Bryant also submitted a federal trademark application for “THROW UP THE X” for athletic shirts, graphic t-shirts, hoodies, and similar clothing items in 2022.
