Deebo Samuel is a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League. Samuel played college football for the South Carolina Gamecocks.
Tyshun Raequan “Deebo” Samuel was born in Inman, South Carolina in 1996. He was given his nickname by his dad and it was taken from the movie Friday.
Samuel had a prolific high school career. As a wide receiver, he had 2,751 yards and 36 touchdowns. He also recorded 898 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. Defensively, he had 94 tackles and 12 interceptions. He was an All-Region and All-Area selection as well as the High School Sports Report Class AAA Offensive Player of the Year. Samuel was invited to play in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. Additionally, he was All-State, All-Conference, and Conference Player of Year in basketball during his high school years.
Samuel committed to the University of South Carolina, where he redshirted his freshman year. The next year, he sustained a hamstring injury during the team’s season opener and while battling this and other injuries, he was only able to play in five games that season. Samuel played in ten games during his sophomore season, where he had 783 yards as well as 98 rushing yards and six touchdowns. He also played in the Birmingham Bowl that year, where he had 190 receiving yards. He had a great start to his 2017 season, running back two kickoffs for a touchdown in back-to-back games. In the third game of the season, he caught a 68-yard touchdown pass but sustained a broken right fibula, which ended his season prematurely. Samuel decided to return to the University of South Carolina for his senior year. During the season he amassed 882 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns. He sat out the team’s bowl game but did opt to play in the 2019 Senior Bowl.
Samuel was invited to and attended the 2019 NFL Combine, where he ran a 4.48-second 40-yard dash. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
He made his professional debut in week two against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he had three receptions for seventeen yards and a fumble. In the following game, he improved to five catches for a total of 87 yards. Samuel then had a standout game against division rivals, the Seattle Seahawks, where he caught eight passes for 112 yards. He followed that up with another game, where he caught for over 100 yards. Samuel then scored a touchdown in each of the next two games he played in. His best game of the season was the last regular-season game, which was against the Seahawks. He caught five passes for 102 yards and rushed for a touchdown as well.
The San Francisco 49ers went to the Super Bowl at the end of the season but were unable to secure a victory. In the championship game, Samuel caught five passes for 39 yards and rushed twice for 53 yards, the most recorded by a wide receiver in Super Bowl history.
The 2020 season was riddled with injury and illness for Samuel. He spent time on the non-football injury list, the injured reserve, and the reserve/COVID-19 list. He had one touchdown for the season. However, he did have a standout game against the Los Angeles Rams, where he had 133 receiving yards.
Samuel started the 2021 season strong with four games over 100 yards in the first two months of the season.
In 2019, Samuel filed a trademark application for a logo that is the letter “D” with the letter “B” inside of it. It covers use on apparel and clothing items that include pants, hoodies, sweatshirts, sweatpants, shirts, t-shirts, and jackets.
He also applied for a trademark for his logo with the words “DEEBO SAMUEL” underneath for use on clothing items such as shirts, t-shirts, pants, jackets, sweatshirts, sweatpants, and hoodies.
In 2020, Samuel filed a trademark application for “19 PROBLEMZ” for use on clothing and apparel such as t-shirts, pants, jackets, and other items. He also applied for a trademark for “19 PROBLEMZ” for use on rubber wristbands worn as bracelets. “19 PROBLEMZ” is a play on the title of a Jay-Z song, “99 Problems” and Samuel’s jersey number, which is 19.
